Okay, I'm a pretty cheap bastard, lets get that out of the way. My kids need... no I need a DVD player in the truck so the kids won't drive me nuts anymore going skiing. We looked at those VCR's w/ small TV screens but figured they'd take up too much room. We found a portable DVD player last night w/ an 8 inch screen, bigger than the vcr one's so we bought it ($1200 DVD player for $500, the box had been opened and the remote is missing so they had to cut the rate but have ordered the remote).

My questions:
1. Has anyone had the top to the center console apart? The one that flips back and has cup holders. I'm contemplating mounting the DVD player right there and cutting it open to countersink it, how much room is there between the black plastic underneath and the rubberized top?
2. I'm planning on running it off a regular cigarette lighter adapter, do you see any problems w/ wiring two cig lighters and leaving one underneath the console up front so I can still have the other one exposed? (Buy a new one and splice it into the wires just before the stock one, leave it under the console and plug the power cord in). Is there a better way of doing this?
3. I plan to hook it up to my aftermarket CD head unit but I'll let the car stereo guys figure that out.

What do you guys think, are these plans stupid, should I not cut my truck apart to mount it?
Thanks,
Lynden

Ho, I need something to keep the kids quiet before I end up in jail. Plus like I said they wanted $300 for one of those vcr one's w/ a smaller screen. I'll be paying for a while but I figured the DVD was a better purchase.

Cheap meaning I wasn't about to drop $800 on one of the fold down screens from above then drop another $250 on a DVD/CD player.

Lynden,

I just did this a month ago for a road trip from NJ to Chicago. Yeah Ho, spending cash for the Bush Plan!

I opened the cubby box lid, applied velcro to the bottom the the DVD and the upper side of the now open cubby lid. I ran the Xtend adapter to the cig lighter and used a CD 'cassette' adapter to pump the sound through all the speakers. It works awesome.

FWIW, we've got two car seats in back, with the center seat position open (actually a cooler seat-belted in place). I don't think the open cubby idea can work if someone actually sits in the rear center seat.

If you really want to modify the cubby, take a look at the cell phone cubby extension. But keep in mind that you want the screen back far enough that it doesn't interfere with your elbow!

Thanks Tom, that's about where I'm at. I want to install it permenantely though so it looks like it belongs. It won't be going in and out, it'll just stay. Good idea about the cel phone cubby. I'll take a look at those. We will probably have someone sitting in the middle seat so I don't think I can mount it under the cubby. That was my first thought, then I had the kids sit in back to see how it worked, I think I'd only get about 50 miles before someone complained about the cubby in his lap...

I just use my laptop and it sits on the center console and plays movies for the rug rats and does much more when I play with it.

Yes, I know that would've been a very good option, allas I don't have a laptop nor the money to buy one (I told you I'm cheap).

Lynden, how about a partition and a bottle of NOX in the back?

peter
p.s. a laptop with a dvd player seems to be a good solution.

Damn, I should've got that one w/ rear air, would've been easy to wire in a wet system to distribute just the right amount of NOX...

I have a D2 and cut out the top of my center console [ the soft part] to flush my 6.5 inch Clarion monitor in. I think you could mount the 8 inch, it is a 16:9 aspect ratio correct? Also if on the monitor part of your DVD is only a monitor i.e. no volume or screen adjustments, you might be able to locate a longer ribbon cable to put the DVD portion elsewhere. I bought a opened Pioneer 8 inch port. DVD for 250 and wanting to mount the screen in my passenger visor for my wife. Let you know, Matt G also just run your own conections to a switched or constant source for power, bypass thge cig lighter crap.

I have my 8" WideScreen display on the dash... i make the little buggers squint if they want to see MY movie.. ?he backs of the headrest is a popular place i've noticed. What type display is it? Alpine? Mine has very long cables for both the DVD and Display. My DVD is under the CD Changer on the passender side, and the amp for the display is under the drivers seat.. all other cables are under the carpet.
