I notice my window washer jug has sprung a leak where the hose connects to the jug. So I figure I'll take it apart and see if it is the hose or the plug that is leaking. So I put some sockets on the "gutter" (for lack of a better term of the space between the fire wall and plastic hood vents in front of the wind shield)so that I could figure out what size the bolts were. I jiggle the truck a little and one of my F'n sockets goes into this hole and drops down on the inside of the front quarter pannel.. There is no way to get in at that thing. Do I really have to take the front quarter pannel off to get my socket back?

How about this: isn't the 1/4 panel alluminum? Why not use a magnet and try to move the socket up...you see what I'm saying? Just a thought, might be stupid but I think I'm gonna try it....Hey George can I borrow your Disco!!!!

The inner fender lining is easily removed by either driling the rivets and/or removing the plastic expansion plugs that hold the liner in. Most times the rivets don't grab, so the plugs may be all you need to remove. It's a lot easier than removing the quarter panel.

I wish.. But the hole it fell into is just as big as the socket and it is part of the cutter thing and not the quarter pannel.. If I could get it up the quarter pannel I still wouldn't be able to reach across in there and grab it with any thing.. Good thought though..

Cool looks like I'll get some new rivets/plastic things and pull the lining off.. That or I'll just leave the damn socket in there and see if it finds it's own way out..

Can you reach it with one of those long flexy three-pronged grabber thingys? Of contact-cement on the end of a stick?

Or pour in a gob of silicone, let it set, then it won't rattle any more

Eric,

if it rattles against the fender, it may leave a few annoying little dings.

funny, i found two extra 9/16" combination wrenches behind the grille of a big jeep - and the reason i got there was that i dropped two of mine and didn't have any left :)

Nope the little grabby things wouldn't work as I can't see the socket. Would be harder to do that then take off the pannel I think. I just did it about 20 minutes before I posted so I don't know if it rattles or not. I'll find out here pretty soon though when I go to happy hour :) Just one more thing on my list of stuff to do.. Hope it doesn't take to long to get the little clips from the dealer..

You dont need to get new ones Eric , they are reuseable . Just pop the center pin out and then pull the shield out.

Eric,

If nothing else it will give you piece-of-mind, because next time you get a rattle in the engine compartment, you can just blame it on the socket and remain happy!

really they won't break like those other cheap-o ones that I have had on other cars? Well hell then, since I have to tighten up my front diff gard I'll pull it today.. Cause I know that it will be just my luck that I'm going to need that socket this weekend for some thing else.. Just Murphy's Law.... Got my shop manual the other day from Nathan.. Man this thing is great.
