OK. Were in tar nation did you guys install your CB? There is no room for me to place my Cobra 25. It is a pretty big CB and I cannot figure out how to install it. Any suggestions? Pictures would be great.

I mounted my Cobra (275ltd?? I think?? HUGE!!) under my passenger seat upsidedown with knobs protruding forward. This works because the built in speaker is upward and it puts the microphone connection towards the driver. To see the channel, you must bend over...putting yourself upside down too...
get it?

I'll post a pic somewhere..
I'm now looking for a place to mount the remote control for the Rancho 9000's??

What about the back of the cubby box? I have seen a lot of RR guys do it that way.

OK, ho, tell us how long it took you to dismantle the headliner and chase all that antenna coax and power cable up through the side window trim? I admit it is a neat installation and I've thought of it too but the idea of tearing into that plastic mounting area where my roof window control switches, light and garage door opener are is just to much to contemplate

I've got a 95 and like Sliders idea
there is lots of room - but how did you secure it under there?
And to what?

What about the top of the dash. Mount the bracket in that little tray. If your CB has a plug/connector (or if you make one), you can remove it when necessary. No need to bend over backwards (or was that down backwards?) :), though under the seat it's less obtrusive.

Another solution is to use the Cobra 75WX or something-rather, with the controls built into the mike. Then you could place the box in the tunnel area or under the dash.

I installed my Cobra 25 on the passenger side of the center console. You mount it right before the spot where the console goes up to meet the dash and still have plenty of room to move the passenger seat. I drilled 3 holes with a Dremel and used 3 small machine screws and fender washers to secure the mounting bracket. The power cable is easy to route through the dash and to the fuse box. The coax isn't hard to put under the carpet out the back door to the spare tire carrier. I installed the antenna onto the spare tire carrier with no spacers and have no clearance problems. I have the stock 235/70 on the stock spare rim. If you want pictures or anything else, just ask me.

Matt, that is _exactly_ what I was thinking. I was just out looking at my cb and thought that would be the perfect place for it. Question I have about those of you that run your antenna out the back door and mount on the spare tire carrier (what I want to do), where do you route the coax out the door? Does anyone have pix of coax connecting to the antenna mounting? Thanks!

I have mine mounted on the fuse box cover, to the right of the steering wheel. Its a smallish Radio Shack unit, and it is mounted with double sided stiky foam. It has been there for over two years now with no signs of moving.

Same exact thing on our disco, just above my left knee. Probably got the same CB too.

Matt,

Could you please post/email some pictures of the antenna installation. I am planning to route a coax to the back and mount the antenna on the spare carrier. A brief set of instruction and parts needed would be helpful.

I have a Cobra WX75ST (??). The controls are located on the handset. The remote unit is mounted in the tunnel area with just the connector sticking out. I have handset holder installed just to the right of my right knee when I am sitting in the car. Works well.

Look here. I did it this way and it works great. Mine did not even require any spacers to offset the spare tire at all.

It is a little tricky to route the coax but not too bad. I went through the rear door skin, and the umbilical in the door jamb, then under the pad that is under the rear carpet and under the fuel pump access cover. Then I routed it along the frame to the front and came in under the dash near my clutch pedal.

I haven't actually tried it yet, but I bought a real small radio shack CB and plan to stick it where the cup holder is. It looks like there will be enough space though it will require some cutting in the back to remove the cup holder stuff (no going back now), but should work. If it fits, it will be plenty easy to run the wires etc. I'll let you know how it goes.

PS Does anybody know what is right behind the cup holder?

PK,

Why did you go into the vehicle, only to go back out throught the floor, then back in again through the firewall???

I did the same as you - through the rear door skin into the door, then through the rubber accordian tube into the right rear trim panel. But then I sent the cable:
- under the carpet/over the right rear wheel well,
- along the right rear door and under the step plate,
- then under the carpet behind the passenger seat over to the drivers seat.

The PITA is routing the coax from the spare tire mount to the driver seat. The cleanest installation is to go through the door skin and use a liquid tight strain relief to seal it up.

I did a little different installation on the spare tire mount too. I mounted a separate mast to which my antennae mounts. The antennae does not mount directly to the spare tire mount.

The power box for my 75WXST is zip tied to the underside of the seat frame, so it stays above water on the floor.

I usually just leave the mic in my lap or the navigators lap. But I can also hook it to the overhead console.

If you want pics of anything, let me know

How exactly do you hook the power lead into the fuse box? I've had a cb before in another truck and just tapped into the cig-lighter wire for power, and believe it or not never fried the cb. I'm an idiot and I couldn't figure out the fuse-box way (the right way.)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Bill B on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 - 09:29 am: Edit

Marc - you can use a fuse tap available from any autoparts store. It replaces one fuse location and is good for up 10 amps. The tap has a fuse location for the original fuse you pulled to put it in and then a second fuse location for your accessory (CB) fuse.

I used a cigarette lighter adapter from Radio Shack and just plug it in the cigarette lighter if I want to use the CB. Very convenient no hassle. Works fine. BTW I got the sports dust proof, moisture proof from Radio Shack ($70.00). I installed the (bracket) in the left side of the center console, speakers facing towards the driver.

As for power, all the accessories are wired to a distrabution fuse box (one wire to the battery, lots a wires out on individual fuses) incased in a water tight yellow soap box mounted on the inner fender near the battery. You just have to rememer to turn off the CB when you are done. This set up was made after the pos. battery terminal began to look like medusa.
