Series 1,,,,,either are great trucks but you can pick up a series 1 cheaper and have more money to add the things you want...

Both are great vehicles. It really depends on what you want it for. Personally, I like the D1 for the following reasons:

Disco 1s are easier for the do-it yourselfer. I am amazed at how easy they are to work on. Also, there are less things to break on a D1 than on a D2 (i.e Traction Control, etc.).

D1s are also narrower so they are easier to get down narrow trails. D1's have less overhang in the rear. Also, it is pretty easy to cut off the font bumper end caps and remove the spoiler to increase the approach angle on a D1. This is much harder on a D2.

I'd also recommend trying to get the newest Disco that you can. 98s are better than 97s which are better than 96's. This was due to the BMW quality control program taking effect at Land Rover. I heard that 95 was a banner year in sales for Rover, so they were a little stretched at the seams. This meant quality suffered a little in 95. I don't have much to back this up though. I have seen a lot of really nice 94 Discos on the road. If you can find a good one, this would probably be a bargain!

Essentially, Land Rovers are all hand made (no robots and no overhead conveyors). I'd try to get a look at the service history on any Land Rover that I was seriously thinking about. The record usually gives good clues as to whether it is a star or a lemon.

Best of luck in your decision.
Thanks,
Mike B.

As a DSII owner (most people here are DS1 owners) I'll have to say get a DS1. The DSII has some very nice features off road. Traction control is awsome and don't listen to comments about it being just one more thing to fail. It works just like ABS just in reverse so it's just as reliable. Disco II's don't have a CDL however with 1999-mid2001 models it was an easy upgrade to install the linkage from the DS1 to give you a CDL. The combo of 4wheel traction control(ETC) and CDL is almost like having a rear locker. But ETC alone is a joke. So if you get a DSII get a used 1999-mid2001 and make sure it has the xfer case with the CDL even if the linkage isn't there. Non-CDL xfer case DiscoII's (IMO) bite! The other plus for the DS1 and huge downfall of the DSII is the non-field repairable axles. So even though I have a DSII and really like it if I was going to get a trail vehicle it would be a Disco1.

At this moment, I have to say I agree with the above - We have a 2001 DSII, SLS, NO ACE. Last night we stopped by our dealership to check out some other vehicles on the lot. Our Dealership recently went through a complete change in management and staffing ... Ran into the guy that sold us the Disco, and in conversation, we were talking about the cons of having ETC (only). He agreed there are times when ETC alone just does not cut it. We then mentioned we were looking forward to insatalling CDL. He looked at us kinda wide eyed and said "Oh! But that would VOID THE WARRANTY!" - Great. (I felt like slapping him in his silly face.) All 3 dealerships in our area are under the same ownership ... Some dealerships are cool about mods of this nature with regard to warranty work and others are jackasses. I've got some extra work to do now ...

Buy yourself a good used 98 and use the money you save for extended warranty and/or off road modifications.

Best wishes,
Kim

Adam, after your comment I have to wonder what you mean by "good" equipment for DSII's. If you want it, it's pretty much available. Just depends on where you're looking.

I'll back you up Frank. Seriously - both are very capable vehicles. The D2 suffers from crappy departure angle and there is no real way to resolve that except to lift. The d2 does have larger wheel wells and can accept larger tires so the departure angle issue is a wash. I have found the D2 to be very easy to work on. I think the real key is go get one that the CDL can be activated (pre mid 2001). At OTR I witnessed modified open diff D1 get whipped by a stock CDL equipped D2 just due to wheelspin in a cross axle.

... Then again - like the first response - you could save enough by getting a D1 to do some serious mods including lockers. You would be pretty unbeatable for the price. Just depends on what you want.

cole,
just get whatever you can afford. whatever your car is capable of is all up to the owner anyways.
