Just changed mine last week. As you are looking at the engine from the front, look for a connector at the top left side of the engine. Close to the firewall. It should be connected to the stepper which screws into the top of the engine. It can be unscrewed with an adjustable wrench. Found mine by comparing the new one and looking for the old one on the engine. Look under stepper to see the part numbers available. Hope this helps.

if you need to replace it, don't have the dealer do it. Buy one from nathan crabtree or rover connection or someone. It will be like $100-150. It is quite possibley the easiest thing on your rover to replace :-)
After you've replaced it, disconnect the neg battery lead for a couple of seconds (if you have a stock radio, make sure you have the security code) and your done. The dealer wanted $450 to replace mine.

I had a problem with mine a few weeks ago. I cleaned it, and the hole it goes in and the problem was solved. Mine is also a 95 discovery. Look at the top of the manifold (on back, pass side) for a plastic thing with about 4 wires coming off it. It sticks straight out, parallel with ground, you can't miss it) I unscrewed mine by hand. just unplug it, grab the whole thing with your fist and twist it out. Clean it good with carb cleaner, buy a fiber gasket (any pep boys), mine fell apart as soon as I removed it.

dicsonnecting the neg battery cable reset the check engine light. this seemed like the easiest way to do it.

Scott:
I didnt have the check engine light on at the time of the stepper motor replacement. I had reset the light in the past using the fuel injector fuse under the bonnet.
