You gonna have some fun now.... Start by getting some shims for preload from Bill. Then find something that will get the outter race out with the third member in the truck. Its easy if you got that stuff.

Yea, I figured as much. I think I am going to pull the driveshaft and the axles until I can find a shop to take the third member too. I'm debating about just fitting a TT in there since I'll have the whole damn thing out anyway.

Is it any easier to do the job with the third member off?

The biggest problem is getting the outter race out. If you have a puller its no problem at all. If you dont...... good luck... Also , your odds of having the correct preload with the existing shims and one new bearing are next to nill so you will needs a few of them. I think they are the same as a dana 60 but havnt really held them side by side to check. Lastly , just because there is slop there and maybe a leak doesnt mean it was just the outter bearing. It very well could be the inner. If either gos south the pinion will shake and leak..

Well,

It wasn't slop that had me towed home on a flatbed today! I was on my way out of town on the highway, got a bad vibration, checked the engine over but it was fine. After pulling forward and back, it sounded like the diff. I opened them both up from the fill plugs and the front was very hot. The oil was a little low so I added some on the hopes that I hadn't broken a ring or something. Drove abotut 15 feet with no change.

So I called for the flatbed. After getting the truck up on 4 jackstands, and letting the drivetrain spin, I could see that the front driveshaft at the pinion was swinging wildly. It's bad. You're right, could be more than the outer race, but if I could get to it without pulling the third member, I thought it was worth a shot.

By the sounds of it, I need to just pull the whole damn thing down anyway. Can anyone good shop set this up or does it have to be a shop familiar with the rover diffs?

A diff is a diff is a diff. AS long as they know what they are doing any driveline shop should be fine..
