Carl Cedarholm and myself (well, mainly Carl) installed an external CDL linkage on our D2s this weekend. Its as easy as pie. Although the first one took a few hours and we dropped the front drive shaft, the second one we did in about an hour and didn't even need to drop the shaft.
The lock is engaged by reaching under the passenger door, below the vehicle, and pulling (or pushing) a 2 foot long push-rod attached to an aluminum strip (1" x 6.5 inches" bolted to the CDL bolt. All of it is in a flat plane.
I am hoping that Carl, since he's the graphics artist / maestro, would be able to draw up a diagram of the linkage, and post it here?
If anyone is nearby (Central NJ) and would like one, just let me know and I'll slap one on for you. We may have to wait a short time for the transmission stuff to cool down. But the fixture should only take half an hour to install.

Dean, I think you meant to say:
We have designed, engineered, and produced an highly sophisticated CDL engagement initiator that for just $19.95 "not including shipping and handling" could be custom installed on your truck today!
Supplies are limited so order yours today!

Carl,
Don't forget the $400 installation fee that we charge! After all, its not available without installation!

Hey Dean, that's exactly what George Saitanis did for Norm on his DII. Man you guys are good! Where do I send my check to?

And if you act now you'll get a set of Ginesu knives and a Disco Web cook book all for $19.95. (+ $400 installation) Mention this add and your name will be entered into a chance win a trail ride in the Pine Barrens to test your new CDL.
Dean

Larry,
No, I was actually not planning to do that hill this weekend (not the same area). But, it might be worth the detour. Hmm, now you got me thinking...

Just to clarify the $400 does not include air fair or hotel accommodations should we have to travel outside Dean's backyard for the install.
...and due to current airport security the steak knives and cookbook must be shipped.

Even the cookbook isn't allowed on the plane?
By Carl E. Cedeholm (Cederholm) on Monday, October 29, 2001 - 03:50 pm: Edit |
Ok mabe the cookbook can go on the plane, but even that could be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Darn ... my weakness! (as if everyone on this board doesn't already know, LOL!) ... Well, I'm fairly broke, but if you guys just happen to be in the neighborhood, (i.e. So. Cal - clear across the country from you) would ya mind stoppin' by? ... Um, I'll wash & wax your truck??

Carl & Dean,
I take one, but the $400 installation charge seems a little high. If its negotiable, how about a 12-pack of your favorite beer instead??

I did the same mod recently using a spare couple of feet of 1" flat bar aluminum I had laying around the garage. It works great, but the only complaint I have is when I shut off the engine and want to keep ETC I have to do this dance of getting out, moving the lever, getting back in to disengage, shut off truck, restart, then get back out to reingage. It was such a pain that I just leave ETC & ABS off most of the time.

OK for real!
Dean,
If we are going to make a few of these, and while I'm in Boston this weekend at my shop,I'll try to make a small production jig and grab an end mill to help make that hole properly.
For the rest of you, I'll try to make a good drawing to post for you to make your own.

What is the easiest way to get the CDL selector bolt? I can barely get a finger on it from under the truck reaching around the drive shaft.
Also, what are some other aftermarket solutions to fabricating a lever?
