Hey Guys I am new to this so bare with me. I have a 95 Disco, but this is accually a question for my 89 Range Rover. I have replaced the thermostate, radiator, and temp sensor. It is still running warm at high speeds and when it is idleing for a while. It will get up to about 3/4 and sometimes almost redline. It is kind of odd the guage will go from being 3/4 to down way below the 1/2 and then when stress is on the engine,it will go back up again. I have been told maybe a Head Gasket, but there is no white smoke, fluid in the oil, bubbles in the exspanion tank. When the guage is reading 3/4 or higher shouldn't the coolent be coming out the expanion tank because of the heat? What is the problem guys help me figure this one out!!
Thanks,
Ron

Buy a real guage and don't trust the one in the truck. It turn out that you really don't even have a problem.

Ron,
it's been beat to pieces. here are the items to check and replace if faulty -
- thermostat (punch the center out or replace with 160F one)
- fan (all blades present), fan clutch (must feel tight when hot), and shroud
- radiator (make sure it isn't clogged).
my '89 rangie was running at nearly 3/4 of the white zone, and shaking like a fox terrier seeing a cat. Fan clutch was seized solid, bearing melted, 2 fan blades broken off, shround missing. All these items run up to ~$600 at the dealer, you can get them from parts places for 1/2 of that, or you can get yourself a big electric fan and give it a shot. I bought a 16" fan from PepBoys (Hayden 3710, $150 before tax), and i haven't seen it to go beyond 1/2 of the white zone in the worst conditions, and typically between 1/4 and 1/3 - in all others. All that without auxilliary electric fans kicking in (they were before).
if it continues to work as it does now, it would be the best $150 i spent on the rangie.
side benefits - you can have it turned on/off by a temp. switch, have manual override, have it reversed so you push hot air out of engine compartment (slow crawl), etc. I only have it wired straight off the ignition (via relay, of course), that would be the right terminal on the ignition coil if you look at it from the driver's side front fender.
