Bought a 97 Disco about 6 months ago and have a mysterious intermittent squeak from one of the wheels. However, I can't identify which one. The squeak is sometimes heard at low speeds (in traffic), and stops when brakes are applied. I can go for weeks without a peep, but then it comes back. The sound does not seem to be brake related, since the sound my brake pads make is a very different. Could it be a wheel bearing that needs to be re-packed? Can anyone help with a diagnosis?

I would say that it could be a bearing, but I think that it gets progressivly (spelling) louder as time goes by.. I dont think it would be intermittent (I think). I had the smae squeak in my 94 when going slower in traffic and the such. I to was there sometimes and other time it wasn't. I just got a brake job an I no longer hear it so I am thinking brakes..

I hope that helps..

Brake pads especially Mintex ones seem to want to be rebedded in from time to time using a harsher han normal application.

I have the same problem with my '95 disco. I had new rotors and pads installed all the way around and the sound came back in 2 weeks time. I took it back to the mechanic that has done my work for 10 years and he could find nothing wrong. I hope someone knows the answer, because i do not rely on the local Land Rover Dealer. Those squeeks are really annoying!

I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy! Basically I get the squeaking noise from my left front tire (as best I can tell). It comes and goes but has become more frequent recently. It goes away if I tap the brake lightly and may return right away or 30 minutes later. Interestly, if I have to make a sharp turn the noise disappears during the turn and starts again when I'm heading straight. The noise seems to speed up and slow down with the tire rotation as well. I've had all 4 brake pads replaced and the left front rotor replaced by Land Rover.

Well my 99 Disco Series II has the same symptoms, unfortunately I do not have an answer either. I have a feeling though that it may have something to do with the metal guard around the brake protecting it from the inside. (The 1mm thick sheet metal that is on the inside of the hub.).

It is also on the left side, not sure if it is the front or back or both. Very annoying sometimes, but I just dab the brakes, it goes, then comes back.

Oh well, I will live with it for the moment, I just love features!!

Interesting, my '97 disco is doing the same thing, and it just caught my attention in the past few weeks, now that it's getting warm and I have the windows down. Though I have not tried to solve the problem yet, my first instinct says that the brake pads are 'floating' and not coming completely away from the rotor. This is not to say that the brakes are 'on' but simply that the pad surface is just ever so slightly in contact with the rotor, making the sound. I will have the front wheels off of my disco this weekend to install spring spacers, and I'll have a look at the calipers to see if I might be right. Not really anything wrong is this is the case. Could be that some of the 'anti squeal' paste applied behind the pad (in between the metal shim and brake pad) would clear up the noise. Though it may not.

Took me awhile, but I finally got around to changing my front brakes this past weekend, and yes, the squeaking has stopped.......just to follow up :-)
