Hello all,

I am new to this form and have found it very nice. Many thanks for your great site, good work. Now on to my questions. I am interesting in buying a Discovery. I have read that when the D2 came out, they don't come with a center locking diff? (how do I know which used disco has the locking center diff or not?) Also which discovery 1 or 2, is the best for off road and everyday use. This vehicles will see a great deal of off road use, not rought, just a lot of it and many highway miles, Gas mileage is not a worry but insurance and repair costs are. Please, any info would be great your input is very much needed and will be appriciated.

Thanks

lenny

Lenny- the easiest way to tell if it is a D1 or D2 is to look at where the tailamps are located. Series 2 Discos have their tailamps mounted much higher in the body. As far as the difflock issue goes, all D1's had a difflock feature, and none of the D2's came with difflock. most of the mechanicals are still there, and there are a few folks on this site that seem to be coming up with solid ways of engaging difflock on the D2.
If she is going off road a lot, go for the latest D1 you can find. Up to and including part of 1999.

I'll second what Craig said... I've been very happy with my '99 Series I Disco...

In addition to looking at the position of the taillights, look at the door-handles... the D2 has handles that you can grab, the D1 has flat-plate handles... you reach in and pull the plate to open the door, but there isn't a "grab-handle"... Also, look at the side turn-signal lights on the fenders... the D1 lights are square, the D2 lights are ovals....

Good luck pickin'!
