Wondering if anyone has any gasket removal 'tricks'. I replaced my water pump last night and I swear it would have taken 30 mins if I could have gotten that damn gasket off easier. I tried using some Permetex gasket removal spray with very limited success - it still required lots of scraping time. You guys have any product or technique recommendations for next time?

How difficult is the installation, minus the gasket? What does the process involve? Also, did you access it from the top or bottom?

It's pretty straightforward. Here's the basic steps:

1) Remove rad shroud (2 clips at top)
1) Drain coolant by removing bottom rad hose.
3) Remove fan w/ 36 MM wrench (mine loosened by turning the wrench CCW, looking from the front). Might be able to use some channel locks - I used an old bike headset wrench I had lying around.
4) Remove Serp belt - need 15mm socket to move tensioner
5) Remove 3 bolts on WP pulley.
6) Remove ~6 10mm bolts and 3 11mm bolts that hold pump on
7) Remove pump
8) Scrape old gasket (this is where most of the time went)
9) Reinstall pump - I used some spray tack gasket and blue loctite when installing.
10) Put all of the other stuff back
11) Refill with coolant

It took me 2 hrs total, with several 10 min breaks to let the gasket remover to "work" (and get more beer)

Thank you Scott. I appreciate it. I have not been able to isolate my squeal as of yet. I listened with a screwdriver and the idler/tension pulley is not quite as smooth sounding as my water pump, but I want to be prepared. I am hoping to pinpoint it in the next week or so. It is very intermittent at this point.

get a drill with a wire wheel,gasket comes off and leaves the surface nice and smooth.Be careful not to put too much pressure and make sure wire wheel is not too stiff.
