I was lubing my new(used) Disco I and noticed two mufflers underneath it. There are 2 Cats (one for each exhaust manifold), and 2 mufflers. What's going on?

Jon,
What you saw was 2 cats, a muffler and a resonator.
Its fun just to lay under the rover and marvel, isn't it?

Can I remove one of these things so it has just a muffler like any other vehicle? Reduce backpressure and all? I figure with the cats and a muffler, it'll pass emissions....

The resonator makes it quiet on the highway. If you've ever ridden in most cars with "high performance" exhausts, you will notice a very loud resonance at 2500 rpm or so. Right at cruising speed. Often the noise will die off when you get above 80. I also don't know how much backpressure the resonator adds.

I had a guy remove my resonator, it hung about 2 inches lower thaqn it should. I have 235/85/16s and i didn't notice any performance decrease after it was off. I will not be putting a new one on.

I have also removed my resonator. Like Jeff, I am running 235/85/16's and have not noticed any lack of power (that was not already there from my tire choice). I also changed my muffler to a flowmaster and have found that the resonance is not bad at all. In fact, it makes the V8 sound quite nice.

it's not really a resonator, if you look at it carefully you'll see it's a short muffler. it doesn't offer a straight thru design like most resonators do

Which one is the resonator? Is it the one furthest back or the one that's "in the middle". Thanks

The one in the back is the resonator

Just came upon around $500, so I'm going to slap on a Borla S/S system. Hope it works.......

Let me know how you like it. The exhaust has started to rot off my Disco and I'm planning to replace it with a Borla. Thanks!

SUMMIT RACING has BORLA for like 375 delivered.

I think Nathan Crabtree is selling Borla as well. He traditionally has the cheapest prices I have seen. Give him a shout.
