I upgraded the factory speakers with MB Quarts and of course the factory unit does not have the power to drive the speakers, oops.
Oh well, amp addition time.
Where have you placed your amp?
Under the seat or in the rear storage bins?

Thanks
Bruce

how big is the amp cause i run 1200watt audiobahn amp to my 15" subs and a pheonix gold 600watt amp for mids and highs(3pair). if you just need a place to mount a little amp i found that under the front seats are prim spots i have one amp under the passenger seat w/my disc changer and under driver is the 1200watt w/ a cb radio. you should also not advertise( leave it in plain sight, that is why i chose to hide it all under the seats) your stuff i found that sticky fingers love land rover's if you know what i mean? and if you add the big subs it is worth the buck have your local custom stereo shop build you a camo box,low key i mean and also bolt it to the floor from the inside of the box so they cant get at it! if you go all out with that car it rocks! i show mine in audio shows and have placed 1st thru 4th never worse producing 164db ( the amp watts i told you are rms) have a great time with your speaker box on wheels

I put my Punch 250 in the drivers side storage compartment and my Fosgate 10 inch HE sub in the drivers side.

I tried to mount speakers there and you want to talk about everything rattling, well then you found the right spot (bad idea unless your an insulation professional)it sounds like crap, if you mount a sub in the back don't let it touch any paneling or your in a world of rattle. good luck

I was thinking about placing the amp under the seats also, however, my Disco loves to dive. Guess I will need to replace the stock insulation to make my car more waterproof.
Thanks for the ideas.

Since this thread seems to be in line with my question(s), I thought I'd jump right in... My wife and I are the proud new owners of a '97 Discovery. Everything is great except for two things; I need to transplant my in-dash CD player into our new baby, and I've discovered (no pun intended) rust where the C-Pillars meet the wheel wells (another thread). Anyway, I understand that with a little modification, a type of Volkswagen harness will at least get me power for my CD player. Can anyone tell me which one? Also, where is the amp located (I have the six speaker system with the rear door subwoofers) Thanks in advance!

I dont know where the amp is located but on my 2000 disco2 the harness is a VW01b, METRA, you willhave to test the wires but it will snap in. The constant is in a different spot, if you get one of these, Best Buy has a nice premium system interface from Rockford Fosgate to adapt youhead to the factory amped system. you can e-mail me for more help at paisley001@msn.com

Check out the "Files" section on the lr-discrovery yahoo group. I uploaded the Electronic Troubleshooting Manual pages for the 97-98 DI stereo. In the US version, the amp is behind the RHS side kickpanel in the footwell. From personal experience: if you can get an adapter to let you use the factory amp, do it that way (I couldn't find one). Otherwise, don't change the head unit. The speakers don't sound good without the sub, and the wiring is wierd. Most people who change out end up having the whole system junked, rewired, and rebuilt. The much easier way is to get a LR Changer on ebay for $300. That's the way I'd go if I had to do it again. I've got a 98 that I've been playing with for a while. It is a bit different from the DII. Let me know if you want to know more.

Where is that "Files" section located? Is it on the Yahoo Clubs somewhere?

I have been installing stereos for a living for the past 8 years. The changer is alpine and wont give you better sound just convenience of cd's I will be swapping my head for a Clarion head with TV tuner control to direct my screen and tuner pack, with th Rockford interface all you are doing is dropping the high wattage output of the deck to lower voltage to accomodate the factory input of the oem amp, this also allows you to add aftermarket amp for a little more bottom end. I will be measuring for my mobile video this week and installing my remore start with temp control.

Herky,

You anywhere near Philadelphia? The RR needs a stereo and I am too out of touch and busy to do it right.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lr-discovery, and you have to be a member to get there, for the files section with the diagrams.

Okay, herky, here's the problem (regarding David's post). You say you have a Disco II. The systems for DI and DII are different. I'm not exactly sure how the one for the DII is setup, but on the 97/98 discos, the difficulty comes in grounding. In these years, Rover used 4 signal wires and 1 ground wire running to the amp, and then individual +/- wires going to the speakers from the amp. Since aftermarket head units come with individual +/- leads for the speakers, there's no way to directly connect it tothe factory amp without some sort of "black box" convertor. If the Rockford unit only reduces power, it won't solve the signal referencing problem. The only way I know to solve this problem is to bypass the stock amp and have the head unit power the speakers. But then there's the problem of no bass because of the second amp for the rear sub. Dude, if you've got a solution that doesn't involve rewiring the car, I'd love to hear it. I know you don't get better sound fromthe LR changer, but I'm recommending it because of the ease of leaving the rest of the system intact. BTW, on 97/98 DI's, Pioneer was the manufacturer. Throughout importing in the states, LR has changed manufacturers several times, but keeps the outer appearance constant (this was changed in DII's).

Yours,
Tate

Bruce, or anyone who has swapped fronts,

what size mids were you able to fit. I've been struggling with a pair of 5 1/4 for the Disco 2, but not sure if anyone has had luck with 6 1/2.
Looks to be a bit tight for a 6 1/2".

Thinking about some Quarts myself. Thx in advance,

chu

Actually the Rockford 4 channel line out converter is set up for common ground systems, this set-up is used in Corvettes and alot of earlier Ford products. It will work, I interface aftermarket heads to factory amps all-day. Not for fun but to put food on the table, common ground is no prob. OKC by the way home of 1# Sooners,,,,,,,,,,,,just kiddin'

I have a Series I, so I can help you there Chu.
I do know that you had better examine very closely the depth of your doors before you purchase, else you could be returning speakers since LR has molding that eats-up precious space in the door.
Good Luck.

Herky,
I just picked up my new Disco II LE today and went directly to a couple of local car audio shops to look at replacement of the OE head unit.

I hope to use my existing Premier 10" subwoofer with Alpine V12 100M amp. Looking at an Eclipse 55430, Alpine 7887 and the new Rockford Fosgate units. I would really like to maintain the function of the OE controls on the steering wheel. How can this be done?

Any suggestions on a high quality mounting kit to cover the 1.5 DIN opening?

Thanks,
Greg Braswell

Actually if you pull your factory head the radio mounts into a din size opening only the face is din and a half, a din radio will fit no problem, I am probably going to space the din hole out a little bit maybe .25 of an inch with spacers out of a new chevy truck kit,[ Metra 99-3002 if you are interested, i will take pics of my sub install thus far.

Herky,
Thanks for the lead on the Rockford unit. No one I had talked to thus far had even mentioned such a converter. Guess I wasn't talking to the right people. If I can get the factory amp hooked up again, this will help a lot. Do you know of anything for dual phased antennas?

Also there is a company that allows you to keep steering wheel controls if you own a head unit with infrared remote capabilities. I think it is PAC I will find out today
