I have heard that with a Detroit fitted, if you break an axle, you can also break the diff. Is this true? What breaks? Why does it break?
I hear that with an ARB, if an axle breaks there is a low chance of breaking diff. Is this true? Why?
Thank,

Brett,
According to Bill Davis @ GBR, who is a real authority on this type of stuff, breaking a halfshaft with a DL will usually end up in a broken DL. The reason for this is the sudden release of torque from the broken halfshaft is enough to shear the teeth on the dog clutches of the DL.
Bill also reports that the ARB locker is more resistant to halfshaft breakage, but that the ARB can also be broken by a broken halfshaft. Bill says that an ARB locker lasts an average of 2.5 halfshaft breakages, but will eventually fail with repeated halfshaft breakages.

Which is another reason why we get HD halfshafts...

Doug M twisted one 1/16th of a turn.
Of course Bill says they will go 720 degrees before they snap

Nope , he broke it. I think Dobbs broke a front as well.... These are all trucks wih 35s though and the Big Dawgs have absolutely gotta make the obstacle....

Front or rear?
Fronts go like twigs. CV goes and the splines strip. 600 down the drain. Waste of money IMHO to upgrade. 24 spline cvs and inners (either ashcroft or GBR) would be worth it but you lose ABS.
Rears I could have sworn Rich said that he just twisted his.
Oh well for all practical purposes the rears are unbreakable on any set up you could run on a disco.

Ron you may be correct about Rich , my brain is mush and that was awhile ago. Dobbs did break a front one for certain. Both guys knew it was coming I think because of the situation..

Fronts go like twigs. I have seen three in person all the same situation (cv went and took the axle with it). I also know of one person who has broken 3 which is why I always tell people to buy a spare set and carry them rather than pay the $$$ to upgrade.
To each his own of course though.
I am amazed that some of those D90 guys do what they do on stock 24 splines.

Mine has twisted about 1/4 of a turn, GBR HD"S
rears, and I dont know if the HD's will take that 720 deg twist like a stocker with more of the "tough" metalergy ingrediants before snapping. Thats a good question for Bill as I am now curious about that.

If you look at the one Dobbs blew up that fucker looks like a dish rag being wrung. I would go with the 720. I carry a spare set of HDs Ron,,,lol front ones that is....
