I will never doubt the wisdom of this board again. About 3 weeks ago my tach starting bouncing sporadically - I read in recent messages and in the Tech section that this is sometimes a sign of the alternator going bad. I took this advice to heart and watched my lights, watched the tach, and listened to my starts religiosly for about 2 weeks, looking for signs that the battery was not getting charged. About a week ago, with no signs to speak of, I chalked this up to a loose wire somewhere that was causing my tach to bounce. Well last night it started hard and I finally saw my sign - then the headlights started to dim - then the radio went out - then the whole truck died like I was in an episode of the X-Files. So....looks like I am replacing an alternator. Are they tough to find for a '95?

you can get rebuilds for about $250 or so. mine is a MM with Bosch guts. most parts stores should have them. just get one with a warranty thats all. just don't fork out $600 for a genuine.
by chance have you had the serpt. belt replaced??? people have a tendency to put them on wrong and this will give you the same symptoms as a bad alt.

Hey Garrett,

Thanks for the feedback man and for the heads up. The serp is fine though - I did look at that. My brother is a Goodyear manager so the family advantage is to sometimes have this stuff done without getting your hands dirty! He already checked the alternator this mrning and the regulator within is keeping it from charging completely and he is having a business they work with regularly rebuild it for me. Ahh the joys of owning a Land Rover and being asked to pay $600 for a $60 part on other vehicles!

routing

print this out and paste it in your manual as it is important to have this routing of the belt on hand. it can go on more than one way and will cause you to get an ulcer if it put on improperly. ask me how i know why.

I had the same bouncing tach problem on my 95. Dealer said probably a loose wire, won't cause any harm. A month later my alt. went out on me while starting my vacation. Dealer wanted $800 for new one. but would "help me out" by selling it for $650 or find me a rebulit for $400. I checked Schucks and others, prices ranged from $200-$350. I ended up taking it to a guy who rebuilds motors, alts., and starters for a living. He tested it, turns out everything was fine but the voltage regulator (parts/labor less than $100).
