(It sounds like a tank anyways)
I took my 97 Disco to a local repair shop (not LR) to change the manifold to downpipe gasket (it leaked a bit). Well, to put it shortly, one bolt on both of the downpipes broke while trying to remove it. They said in order to get them out they need to take the manifolds off and send them to a machine shop.
After reading here about the tempermental manifold bolts, does anybody have any suggestions as far as the mechanic would be concerned? Or should I just cough it up and take it to the LR dealer who might have a little better knowledge here? Thanks.

cinch down those other two bolts & they should hold fine. Emphasis on "should" - you'll hear it if it's not holding fine.

Most exhaust places have this thing which with they basically weld a new stud in with. Try that first.

Another question: are the hellish manifold bolts that everybody talks about the ones that bolt to the head, or the ones connecting to the downpipe? Or both?

Thanks Bluegill, but the two others are as tight as can be without breaking those too. And thanks Ron, but I just got 4 manifold gaskets and 6 new bolts/nuts for the downpipe/manifold for both sides ($85) from British Pacific today, so I might as well make a go with it. I wish I had read your reply before driving out there and buying them.

I love having my Disco, but I'm finding out that you sure as hell can't go into your local Kragen and get parts! Happy Rovering to ya!

the hellish manifold bolts that everybody talks about are the ones connecting manifold to the downpipe (y-pipe).

I was fortunate enough to be able to back out all 6 y-pipe/manifold nuts with the studs seized to the nuts, not the manifold. I replaced one gasket and then replaced the stock nuts/studs with hex-head bolts from the hardware store for less than $2.

Cool, thanks Bluegill. I was hoping that it was the ones that already broke. I wish I had your luck with those damn bolts!
