I think I just discovered the source of humming in the rear end. Apparently, the heatshield over the tcase towards the rear driveshaft is no longer connected by the 2 screws, and it's been rubbing, but no damage. Should I take it off, or replace it? An independent here said he's seen interior carpet melt without them. Whadyathink?

I once had a 85 fiero and took it in for service when they put it back togeter they ommited a heat shield and it melted my throttle cable. On any other car no big deal but it was a $350 fix but that was a fiero just a story thought I would share.

I don't know about the heat sheild over the t-case. You sure its not the big one on top of the muffler? I removed the one over my muffler from every LR I have ever owned with the exception of the 1997 Disco I have now to no ill effect. The NAS D110's fell off on the trail. The 1995 RR LWB rattled itself apart, and the 1995 SWB in the garage decided to melt.

Leave all heat sheilds on. Even if it doesn't melt the carpet it can make the interior warmer than necessary.

Thanks everyone, especially for the Fiero story.

Apparently it's been loose for awhile, 'cause the holes that the screws go through have been rounded out three times larger than the head diameter of the screw. I've got it wedged up there now, and if no hum, I'm set, as it's not now rubbing on the rear shaft.

Blue: I only think I've found the hum. Didn't get going fast enough yet today to find out. Have you found a fix yet for yours?

Good luck Blue, and no, the hum is still there. I'm not touching anything util it starts to vibe. Heatshield is now gone, so you'll all know what happens when you see a post for "WTB-Beige Interior Carpeting-'95 Disco".

Mine worked loose and I just used some oversize washers and locknuts to keep it still. Don't need the extra heat here in Phoenix!
