YEA your right, she left here car next to the door, behind the couch! :)

You're right guys, I saw the couch and the book shelf. Looks like a living room.

It sure does look like someone spends a lot of time in there. I think Eric nailed it.

Sure wish I didn't live in Chicago. Then I'd have my very own garage, too.
Someday...

Gosh,
those are soo tempting.

If you think about what you get, they are cheap.
Getting any 1.5 ton axle with lockers, cv joints, and 7.56 gears will cost 5-10 thousand dollars, not to mention the portal feature.
Heck, just building rover axles will cost you
1.5k for the rear and 3k for the front (gbr extreme duty ,detroits, 4.10 gears)

The only problems are no disk brakes, the front diff is on the wrong side for a rover (but you may be able to flip it) and the 7.56 is a little too low. You could compensate for that with new ring gears (if you can find any) or custom transfer case "overdrive" gears.

Any idea how wide these things are?

How about using a NBS Rangie transfer case to drive them. A Boyer tuned 2.5 BMW diesel for ~280 hp

Clint,

The $3500 is a bit much for these. They can be had cheaper. There is not another ring gear option for these 404 axles. Anything in the diff would have to be custom made. The hub reduction is somewhere around 2.5:1.

Big problem with them is that they aren't really designed to spin at the speeds a Disco or other modern truck could turn them. There are other "high speed" axles which can do 70-75. Prolonged use at those speeds with these axlex is not recommended.

Width is about 2" shy of a hummer, but I don't have my tech book to give you an exact rating. If you're really interested I can give you a number to call.

They are not 1.5 ton axles. The 404 is rated to carry over 2 tons in the bed, and the truck itself in lightest form is 6399 pounds.

Of course, the problem of fitting suitable tires comes to mind. As all of the Unimog wheels are 20" and they don't make 33" tires for 20" wheels! The stock Unimog tire is a 37" bias ply. The radial option takes you to 38" in street tread or 40" in all-terrain tread. Mud tires are 42-46".

Talk about trimming!

Who said I was thinking about fenders LOL?

And don't 101 FC wheels fit the mog?

...for $3500, you could buy half a Mog.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By PerroneFord on Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 05:06 pm: Edit

No 101 wheels don't fit. I don't know HOW that rumor got started. The brake drum housing itself has to be ground down to fit the 16.5" rim conversion. The 101 rides on 16" wheels.

Ok

The bolt pattern is the same thats why I asked.

I guess it would work the other way around though mog wheels on a 101.

those things are pretty big......the dudes wife kicked him out to the gharage for buying them..why not just get us military duece they are bad as shit I know a guy that can take one cut off the rear axle shorten the frame and will put a pickup bed on it..so its a duece pickup truck with the huge inline 6 diesal 15000 pound winch and 52" all for 10k$ its pretty cool..aint small either...

Joshua,

I know there are many here who want me to go away. The fact of the matter is that I learn a TON from the people here, and I really enjoy a lot of the conversation. As much as Kyle busts my chops, he knows his stuff and I've learned much from him. I still love land rovers and I still have mine. In fact, I am trying to work a way to keep mine. I'll use the other vehicle for hard core wheeling, and the rover for daily duty and highway trips.

As for the Duece, its about twice the weight of the Mog, not as easy to service, is diesel (which I don't want) and is wider than the hummer which I sure as HELL don't want. It's not much for off-roading either. Anyone who would compare a mog and a duece for wheeling needs their head examined.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Phillip Perkinson (R0ver4x4) on Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 10:51 pm: Edit

yeah but a duece that has been shotened and has a pick up truck bed I think would be light than a MOG..I had much rather have a rover than a diece or a mog..but the duece creation would be fun to have.. for muddin and so on..diesals are less complicated than a gas.no elctronics..mr Lucas....dueces and hummers have thier place somwhere..I had rahter have a rover anyday

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By PerroneFord on Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 11:04 pm: Edit

They are all good for their intended purposes. The duece is a KILLER machine if you've got to move 3-5 tons somewhere and need to do it in all kinds of terrain. But the suspension has little flex, and the thing is as big as all get out!

The Mog has flex like a LR with a 3-link, lockers, waterproof ignition, and lots of clearance. But its slow as a caterpillar on the road.

The hummer is GREAT for high speed runs off-road but has less flex than the deuce. It's also very wide, but also very stable.

The Disco/RR?D90 are the most comfortable of the group, the fastest of the group, the most nimble of the group, but also the most fragile of the group.

And trust me, the Duece wieghs TWICE what a Mog weighs. The Mog is actually lighter than a hummer. Phillip, you've obviously never been in a Mog. Check them out before you knock
em. They're pretty cool. Completely different than a Rover, but still cool.

I think mogs are cool..I have seen one it wasnt wheelin I have seen pictures of them wheelin they are bad ass.I wish they werent so expensive and so hard to get parts for..

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By PerroneFord on Wednesday, November 07, 2001 - 12:02 pm: Edit

They are CHEAP as DIRT and damn easy to get parts for! I don't know who you've been talking to but they told you wrong. You can pick up models with some rust for about $5k and clean daily drivers for $7500. As long as you know your part number, you can walk into ANY mercedes shop or place that has Merc parts and get whatever you want.

There are also about 12 Unimog specialty houses around the US that can get you anything from a bulb to a transmission overnight if you want to pay the shipping. I've found that parts prices are quite similar to a Jeep. Less in some cases for major parts. A new longblock is $800. New factory rebuilt tranny for $1300. New cab for $600.

Daniel what is that thing

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By PerroneFord on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 10:01 pm: Edit

That thing is INSANE, but I guess if you want to drive ANYWHERE in the world there is land, that's the truck to do it in...

A damn remove video drone plane to scout the terrain ahead... talk about over the top!
