hello all, I was just wondering if any of you have had problems with your fan clutch? I have a '98 Disco, and have had the dealer deal with it two times already, each time they say it's fixed and then it comes on again after about a month. Any ideas why this keeps happening? any kind of input would be greatly appriciated.

My fan clutch died and I replaced it with a twin electric fan set-up from Kenlowe. Their kit is awesome; comes with a mounting frame, everything you need and 2-13" fans with thermo switches and relays (and even though your Disco has a 16" clutch fan, a 16" electric fan isn't recommended by Kenlowe). Works great, increased (more like, made available) the power of my engine, and my gas mileage increased by about 2 mpg (they claim 8.5%, but 2 mpg is better than that). Check-out www.kenlowe.com.

...and that's not a sales pitch - it's a good experience :)

I forgot to ask around how much did the kit cost you?

What is your fan clutch problem? Here in Saudi summers of 120F, with AC on ALL the time, my temp (97 3.9) never moves from 40% scale, even in extended idling in traffic. They can be refilled you know - Toyota sells silicon fluid in little bottles - just have to force it in with a small syringe. Remove the spring thing in front gently (may be held on with a dab of silicon so similar), lift out the pin in the centre hole, hold horizontal, warm up with a hair dryer, push silicon in. may take a couple of bottles. Of course, if you have any other reason to go Kenlowe, like a mostly cool climate, go for it.

well, in the beginning it was constantly running, right from starting the truck. I had the dealer fix it, big difference after that... quiet and better power. the second time same thing, but this time it shut off for a while and then come back on from time to time, it was a bitch to constantly hear the hum of the fan and have big time loss of power. to me it felt as if almost half of the power from the motor was lost, the bad part about it is the A/C is almost never on at the time it occurs. good thing I have an extended warranty, but I want this thing resolved and not have to see my numbnut Service Advisor at the dealership. My brother has a '95 and has never had this problem, that's what pisses me off, my truck is even newer than his...

The kit was about $245.00 US delivered. That's considerably more expensive than a replacement fan clutch, but Kenlowe's products come with a lifetime warranty and damage insurance protection (in case your engine overheats as a result of their fan failing the application). I installed it myself; it was really easy. The only hard part was getting the existing fan off, since the fan shaft nut had pretty much seized on.
