thinking of getting steels wheels - I know stock are 16" - any reason to switch?

15" tires are cheaper.

16" tires are better

17" tires are silly

Ah not really. The wave of the offroad future.
37x12.50x17 baja claws, BFGs, MTRs, SSRs etc.

Not really sure, but the tirerack guy told me that (for a D2 at least) there is not room for 15" wheels. 16s are $50 though.

Actucally I think he is right as the wheel shield thingys on a DII do not give much clearance for a wheel smaller than a 16in

Oh! Okay.....
Uh, wouldn't that be an easy fix???

Yes and no. In the front they are on there pretty good. Could also be clearance issues with the rotor as well.

Just stick with 16". A few years ago, 15" was the smart way to go for selection and cost. That's no longer true. 16" tires are well represented in the market. There are also a # of good steel 16" wheels out there for the Disco (LR spare, NATO rims, etc.)
I don't see any real reason to switch.

Lots of those pimped-out Lincoln Navigators & Caddy Escalades have this kind of problem. Some guys upgrade brakes along with the 20+" wheels, and then when they pinch that low profile tire flat, they find that the stock spare won't clear the larger diameter rotors & new calipers. Then they have to get on the cell phone and call their peeps for help.

I don't think there would be a problem with the rotor, but the brake pad housing would rub if you went down half an inch. Jeff is right, plenty of 16s around. Supposedly some camaro wheels fit a d2, but I didn't have any luck finding any right size at several wreckers yards. Stocks are 8 inch wide, but the steelies are 7 although no big deal either way.

I concur w/ sticking w/ the 16" wheels from the get-go, it just didn't occur to me that the mudshields would have interfered with....
I wasn't thinking of removing it anyway, I was thinking of a sawzall solution on that mudguard... I mean, we trim away the rear quaterpanel, why not shorten up the mudshield?
