There is a LOT of truth in that. Nothing like watching a 50 year old coot in a series rig, run rings around locked d90s, Rangies, and Discos. Seen it many times. Skill and experience make a huge difference.

Thanks for that post Kyle.

i like that article, especially since they talk about "making it" as driving over, other than other methods...

That is a good article! Now I don't feel so bad about walking around the tough sections to pick my lines.

Tom , I dont think you have ever driven an "Impassable" trail. What price do you put on "Making it" ??

Kyle

Impassable is in the eye of the driver. I have always said I can do ANY trail with the wifes Mitsubishi Mirage with skid plates and a good winch, but why the hell would I want to? If I wanted a remote control car, I'd buy a Tamiya, not a Rover.

LOL , your outlook will change with time....And you didnt answer. What price do you put on "making it" ? And I mean Impassable ,as in , wall right in the middle of the trail and you aint going around. Mud , with no bottom , right in the middle of the trail , and you aint going around. I aint talking about areas with optional obstacles. I am talking long ass trails with impassable obstacles in the middle...

Kyle,

some day, i will dig a photo taken on some of siberian roads - it is actually the only road connecting the russian far east with the rest of the country. The ruts were made by 8x8 logging trucks (same as mobile launchers, but with different attachments :) )

and there's about 600 miles of that road.
That would be a Camel Trophy!

Great article tho' ... we all know 'em, we all see 'em out there ...

About the the article: Seriously, there is nothing more aggravating, than when there is someone in front of you in a tight, narrow spot, with the "if I just FLOOR it, I'll get out/over this" mentality - Tearing the crap out of the trail, their truck, and everything else in the vicinity.

OK, kind of off the thread here, (my typical MO) but one of my favorite new quotes (it'll be a classic for me) came from Ho. Me, being the curious mechanical retard that I am, (I'm not proud) was wondering about this SLS business that my new electronic gizmo equipped truck was spewing forth - I asked Ho, "why does my truck kind of 'fluff'" ( a family word, aka: fart) several seconds after I stop it and get out of it"? ... Ho took me aside, and said something to this effect: "Kim, it's like this: Your truck - very tense when *you* are driving it. ... It just relaxes when you get out". The man speaks the truth! HAHAHAHA! :)

I like Krysho (sp) and Allied... I had a Tamiya Frog when they first came out.. If only I could find a Discovery body for my Krysho USA-1 that would be really cool...

Siberia was a camel trophey

And they did do the logging roads.

The guy who was on the US team showed us these 4x4 tractors with portal axles they paid to help them out.

I wanted one

eric~ been a while since i have heard the name Tamiya Frog used. i had one back in the day as well, as well as, the Pajero. i lived on the 15th hole of a golf course at the time and the sand traps were great for doing my only little Baja. of course the plaid people did not appreciate it.

Guys, nothing compared with the Lunch Box for wheelie fun. I had the frog and the bigger trucks based on it. Damn things would always blow the rear gearbox.

Oh the days of past when $200 was your full outlay for the "toy car" for off roading.

as a lot of you can see, lots of people out there on the trail or even here on the boards, needs some humbling. time will come and hopefully we'll come to our senses.

i have been humbled by a stock looking samurai.

ever since then, i just expect the unexpected.

I learned (and am still constantly learning) to off-road in a stock (except for tires) Kaiser Jeep. It had a great little Buick V6, 4.88's, and a twisted frame that kinda crabbed along on the road. Oh, and the Warn winch, hi-lift, shovels, and tools all got a work out each time we played in the dirt.

We just went were ever we could, failed many attempts at many obtacles, conquored some that still leave me in stunned, got stuck badly, broke down frequently, and always had a blast. I don't think any one of our "Hey, lets hit the desert for the day" adventures ever ended without something amazing. Most seemed to turn into 24 ~ 36 hour events. Usually, we didn't have over night gear...

Somehow, it seems that more toys you see on a guys truck, the more wound up he tends to be.

I'll just go back to something I heard long ago and shared here earlier in the year. The trail is the ocean and the truck is the vessel. Worship the ocean, not the vessel.

That was a good article.
