I want to start by saying this web site is great and it’s because of Disco owners like you!!!

I own a '97 LSE with 83,000 miles and within the past 2 months the motor has developed a loud ticking sound when cold. After the motor has run for about a minute, the sound gets less noticeable. I change the oil & filter every 3,500 miles and this past oil change; I tried Gunk's motor flush with no success in quieting the sound.

Does anybody have any suggestions????

Thanks!!!

Two things come to mine: an exhaust leak (more like a tat, tat, tat) or a noisy lifter (more like a knock, knock, knock). I've had the good fortune to have both.

If it is a noisy lifter, you might be able to cure the problem with Resoline. You add it to your oil. I think it works by breaking down the carbon deposits and other junk that's built up inside your engine (i.e. valve train). However, it might take awhile for it to do it's job.

I have a noisy lifter that I am trying this on right now. It only makes noise when I let it sit overnight and then only for the first minute after I start it up. However, my noise goes away completely after the first minute. My lifter was quiet this morning, but I think it is too early to know for sure.

As for the exhaust leak, I wimped and took it into the dealer for repair.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Try turning the car off, as soon s the oil pressure light is off. Let it sit for five seconds and fire it back up. Also, if you live in a warm climate, run 20/50 Castrol for oil.

I noticed a change when I put on a fram oil filter. I'm going back to the LR filter.

Make sure your filter has an anti-drain back valve. Try the napa gold filter, essentially a Wix filter. Lessened to a great degree my cold start ticking.

I was having the same problem last winter. I tried Prolong, Duralube, synthetic oil not thing helped. Then I changed my Fram filter for a Mobil 1 filer, no more low oil pressure at start-up. Fram sucks!!!

I had the knocking sound even when the engine was warm. Had the dealer to the lifters and rocker arms and warm engine knock is gone. However it still knocks when cold. I suspect something other than valve train on mine. Maybe loose king pins in the pushrods? I'll see what filter I put on last time. That would be nice if that was it.

sounds like valves sticking. had all replaced 3x over a 2 years on a D2.

They just check them when they did the rockers. Or so they tell me.
