Truck is 96 Disco SE with about 54,300 miles. Went to start and dash lights turned on but car wouldnt start, nothing from the starter motor. Then the car started after a couple tries and then reved to about 1500-2000 rpms and stayed there. The check engine light was flashing. I shut it down and started it again and the same scenario. I let the car sit and then came back, started it and nothing was wrong. Idled fine and sounded good, except some clicking from the cats, i think. any ideas? i apprecaite all of your help. thanks
matt

My disco did the same thing with a really low battery. On mine, my guess is that the battery was low, but when it did finally catch, the charging system realized the low voltage and revved the engine to try and charge faster. This doesn't fully explain your scenario, I don't know if this is the same thing for you, but it's an easy place to start looking. The flashing check-engine light isn't good, though. That's the Rover's "driving me is VERY BAD" signal. You might want to have the stored code(s) read, maybe even towed in, if the light is still flashing.

Let me clarify--on mine with the low battery, it didn't want to start, and when it finally did catch, the idle was very high for a few minutes. No dash lights were illuminated, though, in my case. And after the battery had a decent charge on it, the high idle at startup stopped.

Thanks for the info. The truck started fine today and no check engine light flashing. Do you think it is ok to drive?
