Need a little help here guys. I am installing a non-airbag, non-winch ARB bumper on my 95 Disco. I can do it following the instructions no problem, but I remember reading on the board to bore out some holes and maybe use bigger bolts.
I want it to be as secure as possible, so any help would be much appreciated.
Also, any idea why the is so much hardware left over? I mean it looks like a hardware store. Tons of washers and nuts. No way I could use them all.
Thanks,
Marc

I have a non-abs no winch yet arb bumper and i did it myself with the help of two jacks to control height and balance on both sides.
I did not have to drill bigger holes so i used standard (dunno the measurement)washers, nuts and bolts and it worked fine. I haven't seen it moved. Got towed once goin uphill on a snowy uneven trail and didnt have any problem.
Good luck.

You don't want to drill your frame, just fit the biggest bolts they supply (actually I think the biggest doesn't fit) and make sure you've got three on each side.
That'll be wicked strong.

The 2 front frame bolts should be 1/2" for minimal movement. You may have to "ream" those 2 frame holes with a 1/2" drill bit to remove rust/mud so the 1/2" bolts fit thru. The rear bolt should be 5/8" dia bolt for the rear frame hole with a backing plate for the bolt as the frame has no inner sleeve here for re-inforcement so the backing plate spreads the load on the frame to prevent collapsing. A 5/8" bolt should readily slip thru the rear frame holes.

Yep, the 5/8" bolt should slip through the rear frame holes but you will have to ream out the hole on the ARB. Take John's advice here and find a backing plate (or the largest washer that you can fit) on the outside of the frame. Be careful not to overtighten the rear bolt and collapse the frame.

John,
Do you know what is supplied *with* the ARB bumper? 1/2" and 5/8" bolts, or smaller OD?

Tom - ARB supplies all 1/2" - I had to buy grade 8 - 5/8" for the rearmost holes.

Thanks Guys,
I knew there was something about getting bigger bolts - I have installed it with the supplied 1/2" bolts, but will stop on my way home today for the 2 5/8"s and washers/plates. It already feels pretty stout, but I was concerned about the larger diameter on the ARB holes, and I want to get it as tight as possible.

yeah, that is the key... drilling the rear slot out (to 5/8") on the ARB. watch you dont break your fingers when the drill bit bites and rotates the handle up.
dont tighten too much or you'll crush the frame.
