A buddy of mine sent the following story to me. Apparently a guy with his cruiser club had some problems with the Dunlop MTs. I just bought a pair of the RTs and wondered if anyone running Dunlops has had this problem.

Out of five almost fully-treaded Dunlop Mud Rover tires on my FJ60 (35 x
12.50 x 15, mounted on 8" wagon wheels), two have developed a bulge on
the sidewall. I contacted Dunlop to see if they might be able to replace
them to me or make some other kind of adjustment, even though I bought
them used, since judging by the amount of tread there are not a whole
lot of miles on these tires.

They asked that I have a Dunlop dealer inspect them, which I did this
past Thursday PM. That night I e-mailed Dunlop again with the name and
phone number of the asst. manager at the tire store who inspected the
tires. The asst. manager told me that the belt broke because of too much
pressure having been put on the tire from the outside and showed me the
resultant cut area on the inside on the sidewall near the tread.

I've done plenty of harder wheeling on 33 x 12.50 x 15 Swamper TSL
Radials with no such failures.

I'm still waiting to find out what Dunlop has to say about the two
failed tires, but I also don't know if I want to put more potentially
weak Dunlops on my truck. Are the Dunlops weenie tires? What's the
general consensus?

Hi,

He is running a C load range 15in tire which I am going to assume is only 6 ply.

Pretty much everyone who runs RTs (or mud rovers) on land rovers runs 16in D or E load range 8 or 10plys (245 75 and 235 85 are 10ply E, 265 75 R16 are 8ply D, not sure about 255 85 though).

This is a major part of it. I ALWAYS tell people to go with 16in tires if they have a choice. SSRs BFGs all the same thing you get 10ply on a 16in 6 ply on a 15in.

As far as the actual failure . . . I dunno. I have seen some tires like that (non dunlop) but as for cause I am not sure as I am sure there are many factors.

Ron

OK so who else has busted tires?

side bugles are tire 'wounds' - caused by laterally transfered inertia impacts upon the sidewall belts. curbing a tire while parking with the side wall hitting the curb is a common reason. the result is the tire 'hernia' - i'd imagnine tire ply rating is a strong culprit, but this could happen to any tire is it's hit correctly

My girlfriend just put 33/12.5/15 Mud Rovers on her FJ-60 and the tire was flat in two weeks with only three trips off road (all easy trails). We found a very small hole (pin size) on the inner sidewall right next to the tread. E-tires has a warranty that sends you a new tire so we'll give Dunlop another chance. Hope these aren't shit tires!

I just checked load range and they are an E with a 10 ply so hopefully I am safe. Its funny cause the guy that sent me the story had a pair of Dunlop MT on his FJ-60 and he loved them. Anyway I will keep everyone updated when I find out how Dunlop takes care of this.

I've got 10k on my R/Ts (245/75), and they might as well be new.... I have NO complaints....
