my truck has been very well taken care of not too many seroius off road adventures at all and I was amazed that my 96 discovery with 89K miles blew the rear diff on a real easy hill climb.. the wheels didn't lift off the ground it was all soft dirt and I am actually really dissapointed in the truck right now.. I have 4X'd twice as hard in all of my old toyota's twice as fast twice as fun in the air and never had a rear end blow up on me.. I love my disco , but really dissapointed in her performance last weekend.. the oil was clean and maintained and nothing was loose.. but still all of my gears in there are broke in two or three or four.. it's a mess. I found a used one for 400$ but that is 400 more than I have right know .. is this pretty common?? ome HD spring and shock brand new bfg mud terrains stock gearing...

I have 95 disco with 265/75/16 tires and ARB's front and year. I've been 4wd it hard for the last 4 years and nothings has broken(knock on wood). I now this is not a good comparsion since the ARB replaces all the spider gears, but I think the truck is pretty tough.

I know Hadaz has a clean stock rear diff (full swap with detroit-fitted diff), unless he let it go with his Disco he just sold. Check the "For Sale" section for his email.

oh man.. why didn't I write this before I already payed for the 400$ used one. it's in the mail.. anyway thanks for the info and I really didn't check into pricing lockers which I shold have.. but I was really just wondering how strong are these things..should it be something to always worry about.. I do drive off road often and don't want to fee like I have to be careful not to break anything.. I didn't look at my axles.. are they probably gone too?? I haven't looked yet as I don't have any more money and am afraid to look..

Refuse shipment and stop payment. Sent the guy a check for shipping charges he incurred. Anything but end up with the $400 diff. I have one sitting in my garage with a ring & pinion I can sell you much cheaper.

Man, no shortage of diffs here. I got 2 rears and a front sitting at my place. I think we got the stock diff market under cut.

get a Detroit for $400! Damn, sorry you got ripped off. To answer your original question..yes, diffs always break at about 90k or so...they are very weak for our trucks. Anybody who goes offroad and hit 100k with there trucks broke the rear diff if they didn't replace it first with a traction diff...am I right guys?

reminds me of a busted 10-bolt on a K5 with 35" meats and 3.07 gears. when the cover popped off, and crap started coming out, someone gastronomically challenged said "mmmmm... chunky!"

i haven't broken mine at 90k. In fact, it was in a very good condition when i replaced it with a truetrac.

My front gave up 2 weeks ago at 98k. Back is still going strong (I hope)! Our diffs and axles are notoriously weak. Anyone got a used detroit for sale?

According to my mechanic sources, the problem often lies in a circlip that holds the pin that the spider gears rotate on. This circlip either breaks, or somehow rattles out of its groove. The unrestrained pin then walks out one end of its cage and "BAM"! the whole assembly lets go, often destroying the carrier and even punching a hole in the rear housing with the shrapnel (as in my case). The "warning" is usually a recurring "Tic, Tic, Tic" noise that becomes louder when you are off the throttle and especially when turning and decelerating. Mine went ticking for about 60 miles before the big bang. If you hear this, the only way you might prevent a catastrophic failure is to pull the rear diff and see if you can't re-reat the (already damaged) pin and lock-tite in the circlip. Be absolutely sure that the noise IS coming from the diff before you go to all the trouble. Even if you do get the spider pin in before an explosion, you are only buying limited time for your upgraded locking diff to come in.

Beware the ticking diff bomb!

The center pin itself is also weak, I have seen a few (including mine) that has cracked. Then over time it wears itself down, and the diff collapses.

Yeah, lucky me...here she is pullingmy broken CV joint, just spinning off the hubnut. And then she sresses up pretty well for a night of dancing and min-golf in Va Beach after the CV was replaced.
