Before I waste my time and money jumping on a plane to England to murder the son-of-a-beotch that designed the mud flaps for my 97 Disco I thought I would ask here. How the heck do you get the flap off? I tore one off-roading and I would like to replace the flap. For some reason the bozo's didn't realize that there is an invention called a NUT and a device called a SCREWDRIVER! I tried turning whatever that damn thing they are using to hold them on. One just turns and turns the other the back side of the "bolt" turns. Since they didn't know what a screwdriver was there is no way of stopping it from turning. Maybe it's just me, but in any case if one of you could help me out it will at the very least stop me from putting a hammer through the side of my rover and at the most, from going to PRISON! Thanks a lot..

Bryan

It's a special rivet designed to prevent people from stealing the mud flaps (it is also a good source of revenue for the LR dealers!)

To remove, cut off the nut prortion using a Dremmel. It can be done with a sawsall or a hacksaw. Best of luck.

When you put the mud flaps back on, use stainless or yellow zinc bolts.

Thanks,
Mike B.

This has been discussed at length.

Remove the rest of the hardware and the other mud flap.

Then add Disco Web stickers. Your truck will drive better, get better gas mileage, and you'll pick up more chicks. Honest!

Or just use a grinder and grind the heads off....replace with bolts when going back on with the new one.

or, like the manual says "remove mudflap" under the "Mudflap Replacement" section...

Just keep it off. If you offroad, it will come off again.

Thanks, I figured it out by looking at the previous posts.

I have been told it will get ripped off but it did last me almost 2 years! Besides, I think they look pretty!

And what is this MANUAL thing Cartner is talking about. Is he referring to my gardener?

The factory workshop manual says under the "body" section, subsection "Mudflaps", under the section dedicated to said mudflaps, "Mudflap Replacement"
"1) Remove Mudflap
2)Replace Mudflap"

If its a rounded bolt head at the back, you might be able to hack-saw a screwdriver groove.

I did this last night, and what a f(*&%ing nightmare. Made the shocks and springs look easy. When you go over the pond, count me in.

USC,

Your mud flaps will eventually get torn off on the trails, no matter how careful you drive. If you fancy the look of the mud flaps, you might do what I did with my Disco. I used the cutting wheel on my Dremel tool to remove the rivets that secured the mud flaps and I replaced the rivets with wingnuts and wingbolts. That way, I could leave the mud flaps on when I wanted them on, but could easily remove them if I thought they had a good chance of getting torn off. It's very easy to remove the mud flaps with the wing fasteners there.

Since I occasionally tear one off, I go to the local big truck parts store here in Saint Louis and buy a mud flap for tractor-trailer. I then use an old "Original" as a template and cut it with a razor knife. I can make four flaps for around $15 including new hardware from Home Depot.

come on josh we all know you folks in boston are twisted people who enjoy steeling mudflaps, hood ornaments, antennas, trim pieces and wheel covers. they are commomly traded in the black market for babies, puppies, cigarettes, etc. i sold mine on ebay for $200. i always make sure to take them off or park in police station parking lots when i head to the big cities. us country folk ain't that ignorant. hehe. :)

why is it that someone will eventually loose the mudflaps? it's just like everything else...

if you dont want to loose them you dont have to, just be carefull and treat them like a body panel.

if you do skuff one , you must tell it that you love it, caress it and maybe sing to it. let the flap know how you really feel. kind of like keeping your plants happy.

i dont like the idea of bolts and wingnuts, unless you are dressing the flap up as frankenstien for halloween.

that's just my opinion though

I agree with jeff a truck with out mudflaps is a chick magnet. But my carbon fiber dash is the real hum-dinger. Just Grab an angle grinder and go to town on those gimpy rivets.
