Can anyone explain to me what it feels like to have drive line vibes in detail.. In simple words please as I am a simple person.. :) I replaced my front shaft but, I can't figure out if I have drive line vibes still or if some thing else is going on. Are we talking rolling milkshake or a slight feel on the steering wheel?

Eric
When you installed your front shaft did you line the marks up at the adaptor and the shaft. My GBR shaft was marked with arrows to match up.
And do you have a Rotoflex rear. I still get a vibe from the rear. Tried to remove the centralizing peg with the Dealers tool and broke thier tool(they can repair it :) ) So what is you set up.

There was a mark on the adapter? Nope.. Didn't notice that but, it could only go on two ways.. I'll have to look at that.. Where was the mark? No rotoflex in the rear.. I have u joints.. I'm not sure if it is a vibe though from the drive shaft cause you can barely feel anything.. So I'm not sure what the hell is going on.. I know that getting the drive shaft off will be next to impossible as most of the bolts are probably stripped.. Damn, time to sell it and get a new one. :)

So really Tom, yes simple. Does the whole truck shake, shake a little in the steering wheel, what? Anybody know what size the bolts are on the drive shaft. They seem odd.. Couldn't really find the right size socket or wrench for those..

Really, tried that and it didn't fit right and started stripping them.. Calling dealer to see if they have some.. Might just cut the old ones off and try to put on new ones tomorrow..

Using the open end or the boxed end?

Open end wouldn't fit and the boxed end did on the bolt but the nut was just not getting good contact.. Would either not fit or too loose, just nothing fit right..

Well, ordered all new bolts, found out from Bill what I got to look for as far as lining up the shaft with the adapter.. Will be in the driveway cursing up a storm tomorrow trying to make sure this is on right and that the bolts are all tight.. This is going to suck... It was so much fun the first time, I just can't wait to do it again.......

My 14mm socket doens't fit quite right on the "14 mm" bolts on my rear shaft either. A couple are getting rounded, so I'm replacing them all this weekend.

Don't feel too bad Eric. I'll be laying under there this weekend bitching up a storm while taking off my rear driveshaft for the third time since Sept. The worst part is that it's tough to tilt back a bottle of beer while you're under there...just ain't fair.

Ya... I'm going to take the bolts to the store with me if they don't fit any of my tools right.. I'll try every damn socket and wrench in the place if I have to till I find one that fits just right.. I was told by the parts guy though that there are only to be used once and that if you take them off you shouldn't reuse them.. Of course for 39 bucks for 8 bolts and 8 nuts I hope that this is the last time I have to do this...

$39! No way. They are ripping you off. I bought 4 bolts and nuts for the rear shaft for several dollars from the dealer. You will not likely find the exact bolts at a hardware store so you are stuck with the dealer.

Blue, try a long flexy straw or some spare vacuum hose. Should solve the problem and the Corona might taste better

Agree on the $39 deal. I just cruise down to my neighborhood Ace Hardware (first-name basis with all the old ladies there) and buy regular old nuts & bolts for odd amounts like $0.07 each. It's just a frickin nut or bolt. No gold plating or nuthin.

I have spare hookah hose layin around that doesn't get much use anymore. Thanks for the tip Moe!

p.s. we need some drunky clipart around here...

Blue, are the Ace replacements exactly the same as the originals? Or do you trim to fit.

Yeah, Phil, you have to make sure to get hardware that is up to the task. Moe, I haven't shopped for the driveshaft nuts yet, but I'm sure I can find the right size for the job. I don't need to replace any bolts on my shaft, just the nuts that secure the front of the rear driveshaft to the brake drum. I've cut bolts before and filed threaded end down to smoothly fit nut, but finding the exact size is best. The point is that you don't really always need to fork over the cash for Land Rover's exclusive nuts & bolts! Note: this stuff is from the other side of the pond, so you have to shop the metric aisles.

Eric I assume yours was painted green. the adaptor on mine had a arrow scratch into it and the shaft had the same on the side where it bolts to the adaptor. Bill would have had it matched up for you when you received it. By some chance you didn't knock one of the weights off when it was hitting the swaybar???

I talked to Bill he told me what to look for.. Nope didn't knock the weight off.. Will look tomorrow to see if it is on correctly.. It could be that since the bolts were kinda stripped that one or two aren't on tight enough.. I'll find out tomorrow though..

Good Luck. If I remember you had some shop put it on for you. They don't realize they are balanced with the adaptor on. Damn those vibes can make you hate driving our Disco's

bad vibrations.

Well, it was on wrong.. Don't know if the vibes are gone since I haven't driven it on the highway yet but, we'll see. However, I must say it was easier to do this time then it was last time. Ya, I had a mechanic help me the first time but, we were both working on it.. I know the guy that runs the shop so he didn't have a problem with me working under the car with his tech. It's my own fault as he was asking about that and I put it on for the most part..
