I have a 2000 Disco II and I am beginging to look for new tires. Some people in my club with Disco I's like the BFG All terrains for all around tires. My local tire shop says the closest size 255/70R16 will not fit my vehicle. Does anyone have any experience with this tire on a Disco II

You local tire shop is only interested in protecting their ass, which is why they stick to factory tire specs.
The stock DSII a w/16" wheel rides on 29" tall rubber. My first tire upgrade was to the BFG AT/ko
BFG 255/70/16 which is 30"...acceleration and ride quality about smooth as stock tires. If no lift is planned, they also look well matched to the size of a DSII.
I ended up with OME 40mm lift(1.5") and BFG AT/ko 265/70/16 which are about 31 inches tall. The ride quality is more "truckish" (i.e. the wife notices)compared to the 30" tire set-up. Still, a nice compromise for on/off road...especially for long distance driving.
I'm on my second truck, and fourth set of BFG All-Terrains.

roverine and greg run this exact size - personally i'd do 245-75 the TReK size - though i've always thought the 235-85s are the best overall. an ome'd d2 can easily take 255-85's.
for an AT i like bridgestone dueler AT or yokohama geolander AT+2's.
for an mt - the bridgestone mts so far ARE AWESOME.

steve,
255/85's will rub and some trimming will be involved. for a 255/85 set up, i'd recomment ome 751 up front and 762 rear with spacers.... i think w/ the ome you'r disco would look nice w/ 265/75's which is what most d2's upgrade to w/o rubbing. although i agree w/ you on the 245/75 trek set up. i believe the trek discos only run hd duty normal height springs no lift. so mitchell, if you'r going for some offroadin' and not plan on upgrading springs and shock... 245's are nice.
