How are you supposed to get the new oil in? I searched the archives; somebody said something about a pump or something. Can someone elaborate on this for a novice? Doesn't seem to be any room to get at the fill plug, and even if you could, gravity can't help because the thing is sideways. I know you gearheads probably don't think twice about stuff like this, but for somebody who doesn't turn a wrench all that much it's frustrating.

Thanks.

I just used the Quarts of gear oil and a piece of 3/8" hose. No pump needed just squeeze!

Oldscout,

I just called summit and they said it's safe to put only climbing oils in the T-box. Do you agree and how many quarts do I need?

thanks in advance,
Jinwoo

You can use a small pump that attaches to a drill or they make small hand pumps that you can get at an auto parts store for less than $10. I'm not sure what a "climbing oil" is but you can use 80W90 gear oil. I think its about 3-4 quarts.

I use a $5 pump operated by my cordless drill - makes life very easy and clean - one end of the hose in the bottle and one the Tcase or diffs. Takes less than a minute to fill :)

Check the J.C. Whitney catalog for a pump. The one I use (from them) is shaped like a pistol, fat and green. I think it costs about $15 but I bought mine several years ago. It plugs to your battery and is very easy to use. You run the hose up to the hole and hold the gun low with the bottle.

Bill, where did you get that pump?

To all, How many quarts go into t-case?
Thanks,
Lynden

Lo-tech, NO tech: use the littl' womans'
liquid soap pump. When she's gone of course !

One more thing: how do you guys have room to operate on the side of the tcase? It seems really tight. A hose I could see, but how can you get a liquid soap bottle up there?

Frank, use a length of clear tube and attach it to the nozel, and you might need a small hose clamp to keep it tight. Even better buy the correct pump for a few dollars that screws into a gallon container of oil.

You sure got a point there, Frank - one of those annoying wizards of Solihull inventions.

* I use a simple oil pump: looks like a grease gun: has a length of clear plastic tubing at one end and the push-arm for piston other end. Put nozzle into container, withdraw piston-arm, crawl under truck, push piston-arm.

* Tried Moes clear tube at nozzle, but couldn't find anything fitting the oilcontainer, so ended up with this solution.

* Also tried an electric oil pump, but tubing was too thin for the hypoid nearly-liquid-stuff, but this ought to be best solution - should work well with ATF for gearbox (which is also cramped and disgustingly stupid design)

* Transfer box is 2,3 litre

Just an update -

I got under the bastard last night after buying the proper pumping equipment (thanks, fellas) and couldn't budge the goddamned torqued on fill plug. I think I came damn close to stripping it. I guess this afternoon I'm going find somebody with air tools.

Thanks for all the information, guys.

Well, if it's that tight - don't use air tools! - you really will strip it then. The Tcase is an aluminum casting, so is easy to damage.

Try a little heat from a propane torch. If there was any thread sealant or loctite used, the heat will break it down in a jiffy and then you should be able to get it off.

thanks Bill. You may have just saved me from a major boo-boo...

of course, now I might catch the entire truck on fire...LOL

Frank - no problem - hope it helps!

Lynden - sorry, didn't see your question above. I got the pump at Home Depot - it was $5-7. It has garden hose thread (GHT) connections on either side and I just used some cut lengths of hose as draw and filler tubes.

Are you sure you had the right bolt? On mine, it is a sunken, 1/2" square hole. I just slip the 1/2" wrench into it and take it out. Something like that (I would think) would be hard to strip.

I say, hello dere, kingfish.

Yeah, I got it right. It was the sunken bolt dealie, I was using the 1/2" socket driver everybody recommended. The sumbitch is just on there really tight. It's not completely stripped - the driver still fits pretty snug, but the metal started deforming a little (to the point where it cut my finger when I tired to feel whatr kind of shape it was in).
