Someone on the DII list tried the rears in front trick and got ~3in of lift from stock DII rears in the front of a DII.

Keep that in mind when chosing a lift. I think the extra gain is mainly a function of the closer spaced DII spring mounts in front rather than the DII rears being a heavier rate but I would like to know for sure.

They extending brakes and changing shocks too?

From DII list:

"Just FYI:
I hooked up with Greg Davis this weekend for installation of 2" spacers on my rig. While installing the first one, Greg informed me I could use his old stock rear springs on the front of mine which along with the spacers we thought would level the front with the back. To our surprise, we put the springs on and then 2" spacers all around and I ended up with the obvious 2" lift in the rear; but the front ended up lifting over 5"! The stock rear springs installed on the front had yielded approx. 3" lift alone. I decided to leave the springs in the front and take the spacers off of the front; yielding 2" rear lift and about 3" front lift. The springs also have the added benefit in my opinion of tighter steering and better handling in curves, but they are a slightly rougher ride on bumps. With the added lift, I will be adding longer shocks in the next few weeks(Ranchos?) and longer brake lines.

Much thanks to Greg as he did 90% of the work!

Pics to come."

Props to Greg for helping out and convincing someone to try the cheap bastard lift, or at least a variation of it.

Ok whose next? Dean? You know you want to. Order some 3in RTE rears and put your rears in front. As long as you run stock shocks you should be ok with the stock brake lines but you will want to change eventually, unless you are Kyle. :)

Ahhh... I love to see it!!! Ron, don't answer your door anymore, that's the OME guys coming to find you for creating a surplus of front springs! :)

Ron,

Yep, if you're pretty sure I'm not gonna tear out the brakes, I think I might just get me a set of those rears. And I'm with Lyndon, better watch out for the old man!

No gaurantees but the shock is what limits down travel. You should really get new shocks and brake lines but for what you do (ford whale shit) the extra lift will give you the biggest benefit.

Ron

PS check out alyssa's gallery and note my experience with brake lines as to whether you want to listen to me on the subject.

Only the best!

Ouch, when you ripped those off, did you still have the other circuit working? What happened exactly? Presumably some extreme articulation?

You could add a Series-style check strap.....

Lost all brakes.

Alyssa yelled at me (she was driving) and she nearly fell off a hill (thank god for ebrakes)

How it happened, I dunno. I can tell you what was goign on but why it happened remains a mystery.

Yes, the rears are a heavier spring. Almost the same free height as the fronts, but a much heavier wind (wire diameter).

Oh,

I was meaning the reason you get 3in and not 2in (like a DI) is that the DII front springs pads are closer together.

I was wondering if the DII rears are a heavier rate than the DI rears.

I need to splain things more good

Greg,

> Greg informed me I could use his old stock rear springs on the front of mine

I just want to make sure - these 'old springs' were from a D2 and not a D1 right?

Dean

Ps Ron - was this brake failure on a 2-circuit vehicle ( a disco)?

Yes on a 96 disco. Don't ask I dunno why.

Yes, the rears were from a DSII, and yes, the front perches on a DSII are 1" lower, resulting in an additional 1" of lift w/ like springs compared to a DSI. That's why I got over 4" of lift from 3" DSI springs up front.
