Started to change oil in 95 disco and could not loosen oil drain plug. Was using crescent wrench. What size is the plug so I can go buy a longer wrench?

1 1/8" .... Don't get a socket, it won't fit between the plug and the exhaust with the wrench on it. A large-enough crescent wrench does work, but a combination wrench would be ideal.

I just changed my oil last night and it did work with 1 1/8 short socket and rachet wrench - 1/2" drive

I've read the lug wrench will work....

I've used a large cresent wrench with no problem. Make sure you are turning the correct way.

Counter-clockwise, correct? I'm assuming it's not a reverse thread.

True, a short-socket should, but the regular one that I had didn't....
Normal thread-turns, not reverse.
The lug wrench is a 1 1/16", so it "shouldn't" fit, but I haven't tried to verify that it won't...
