They were the top dog AT tires a couple years back. However, I hear they wear out early (40K). BFG AT's may be a better choice.

my pops has these on his j**p and they seem to do well in the snow. does not take it off road, so hard to say. has about 15K on them with more than 50% left. can get them super cheap on www.tirerack and www.etires.com to name a few. BFG's will set you back much more. but i guess you get what you pay for in the long run.

they are about 50% as capable off road as BFG A/Ts. wear faster. look cool.
i'd think of them as a good tire to pimp out a truck that doesn't see much off road action.

if i had't gotten the used michelin XPCs, i would
have bought the scorpions for my rangie.

Well, despite what everyone else thinks---I like mine. I've only had them for a little over a year, but I have been able to do quite a bit with them. I can't compare them to the BFGs, but I can say that from my experience, they have held up remarkably well off-road. Granted, they are no mud terrain, but they do perform well. Also, they provide a quite ride on-road; and, as garrett said, they are very good snow tires.
I got mine at discount tires for $88 each--that is the main reason I got them. I think you'll be in good shape wither way.

Needless to say, I will probably be upgrading to MTs when the budget allows:)

I got those shoes (38K miles) and they have performed very well. In the mud, rain, sand, highway of Florida; and sand, rock, street, freeways, and some mud here in California (like Gil said, always carry recovery gear). They are soft, quite and they grab the pavement nicely. The only suggestions, don't drop air pressure below 15PSI while off-roading, I have replaced two tires. I would recommend them to anyone that drives 90% of the time of pavement. IF you are doing 80% pavement and 20% off-road, try other tires. Good Luck!

I'm sorry gil, I still have to disagree. Given that it is an "AT" and not designed for heavy off raod use, I think they are quite capable off road. I have done a lot, ranging from bone dry dirt to mud and have found these tires to meet or exceed my expectations for and all terrain. Granted, you must be careful in choosing the right line.

Just thought I would add a little more than my 2 cents :)

how does the pirelli scorpion ST compare to the AT

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By gil on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 08:46 pm: Edit

Chris..they are defintely capable as an "AT". in spring time here in the northeast, the goo gets a little thick at times, and they turn into slicks. Im certainly not saying that they are bad tires, but I can think of a number of occasions that i would have gotten thru some trail sections if I had a more aggressive tread. But, Mud Terrains they are not, and they do provide a great balance between a very good street tread and a decent off-road tire. The main reason I had them was because I was commuting 40 miles each way on the highway every day. Now that my commute is 3 miles each way, they are no longer on my Disco. Like Peter said, if you are staying predominately on-road, then are a very good tire. They wear well, I thought, they are cheap, they look good, they are good in snow, but they are defintely limited in the rough stuff, as is any all-terrain tire. thats why they are all-terrains, not mud terrains. thats just my experience, Im in no way saying that they are bad tires.

No prob Gil, I know what you are saying. And will whole-heartedly agree with you that in gooey mud for some some distance, they would definitely become quite slick. I was just trying to elude to the fact that I believe the scorpion ATs will pretty much go where ever the BFG ATs will.

Nick, I don't really know anything about the STs but I imagine the the ST is to the AT as the AT is to the MT----does this sound like an SAT test question?:)

I've had the Scorpian A/Ts for some 40K miles now. I'd say they've got about 10K more. They wear well and are comparable to the Mich XPCs off raod. Mine are 245/70/16. Great size for stock setup.
