Gary,
This happened to me, it didn't effect MPG very much, but it did effect power when the crack got big. I noticed a difference when I finally fixed it. If replaced mine with a used one.
From what I understand, they can be welded. However, depending on where the crack is, you may need to remove it to weld it. If that is the case, be sure to buy all new gaskets and don't forget the one that bolts on above the catalytic converter.

Clean and JB Weld that sumbitch and forget about it. If it works it will work great, if not then worry about pulling the header and dealing with those evil bolts that like to shear off and break or trying to weld that spot. I am easy like that, easy like tuesday morning.

Just get it replaced. After you replace that one you will eventually need the other replaced. Then, you shouldn't need them replaced again. From what I have been told, they have a flaw, but the ones they will be replaced with don't. About 350$ to replace them at a non-dealer.

Gary you should be able to find a set reasonably at a breaker in the UK.
That would probably be most cost effective.
JB Weld is an epoxy resin used to patch metal. Look for something similar over there.

Kyle brought up a good point on the weld fix a while back - you have to eliminate the entire crack before you weld it shut (otherwise crack can continue to propogate even after it's welded up). Use a grinder to completely obliterate that damn crack, THEN weld.

Helps to drill a hole at the ends of the crack before you weld.
