What Grade and brand of oil do most prefer to use in a Disco? And how often do you usually change it?

I use Castrol synthetic blend 10w-30, Its half synthetic and half normal oil. I get it from walmart by the case and i change it generally between 4 to 6 thousand miles, depending on what else i am working on!

I would go with Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30, it's the best synthetic oil and it will reduce friction a lot. Castrol Syntec has wear scar of 0.576 and Amsoil has 0.373. Add a By-pass oil filter from them and it will remove all particles as small as 1/10 of a micron. Virtually eliminating engine wear.

Valvoline 10w 30: I use it in a DI that has had that all its life and now its at 220K and no oil burning. Change often 2-3K and use a good filter.
Change air filter often too, and keep contaminates out of your engine.

Castrol Synthetic blend 5w-30 in the winter and 10w-40 in the summer. I don't know if it's necessary to go with a thicker grade (synthetic and all)when it's hot out, but I've always done it.

ditto on the castrol synthetic blend. Detergents and life like synthetic, still keeps the seals fresh like regular. 10w 40 year round in the disco. Going to try 20w 50 in the rr. Already use that in the SII for summer.

Jake,
220K on a Discovery Series 1!!! Wow!
What year vehicle? What kind of issues have you run into as far as maintenance and costs.
Thanks
Bryan

Bryan;
Actually now it is closer to 225K. I bought this 94 DI about 3 months ago; I am the third owner. It has been driven up in the midwest (Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana). It had pretty extensive records and about the only thing that has had to be replaced is the radiator and water pump. Tunes ups and services have been done at regular intervals and it has been taken care of. I know that the heads have not been off and it burns NO oil. Compression and power are good, starts, runs and idles well. The truck is driven just about every day 40 or so miles. Tranny is ok, needing a service (flushing and fluid) to be top-notch. All the systems in the truck work fine i.e. cruise, HVAC, except the rear windows, and I think that is a switch problem. Some suspension stuff has been replaced, shocks and a couple of bushings. It leaks oil, but doesn't puddle. Perfect truck? No, but damn good for its mileage. I would not hesitate to take it on a cross-country trip right now. It is a solid, good truck that is quickly replacing my Series III SWB as my favorite Rover of a lifetime, and I have had a few.
