UPON BUYING A 94 DISCOVERY I WAS APPALLED AT ONLY GETTING ABOUT 400KM TO A FULL TANK AT HIGHWAY DRIVING.(110KM/HR).I IMPLEMENTED SEVERAL CHANGES AND NOW CAN GET UP TO 600KM TO A TANK.IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I DID E-MAIL ME.

is your model a petrol or diesel ? if it's a petrol model the best thing is a clean factory air filter, some castrol syntec motor oil, fresh lubricants in all the boxes and such and new fuel filter.

also what accessories do you have - roof rack - bull bar etc - all these count. also what kind of tires etc. also driving at steady 88kph yield dramatic improvements!

right then- after i made the post i realized you had put the motor size which is only available in petrol guise. sorry.

here are some quick tips for you.

1: make sure the car is in top spec in regards to maintainance as stated before. NB: there are some small tricks here as well that help with overall condition. i am assuming this is fuel injected model and not carb'd?
2: if not fitted, install an angled perspex (or aluminium) wind deflector on the front of your roof rack. the rack especially with bulky items will easily pilfer petrol at higher rates of speed.
3: play with the tire pressures- what are you running now and what kind of road - covered or not?
4: is the car very heavily laden? if so are you nose high - level or front low. this too make a difference.
5: re: the bull bar - what make is it and is the factory front plastic wind deflector still present. here in the states we call it the 'poodle scraper' i believe the tjm, and i know the arb models allow for the retrofit of this.

again you are running a bit fast for optimum fuel economy on these bricks. driving 88kph is about exciting as old episodes of 'skippy the bush kangaroo' - but it does work. -80kph even better!

a bunch of us convoyed out to a 4x4 site and in stock guise i yeilded a rate that was about 720 kms per tank. also what is your fuel tank size?

mine's the NAS 90 litre i believe.

lastly, how many km's on the motor? are you getting any smoke from the tailpipe? anything else you can tell of the cars set up (suspension - etc) and such? can you post a pic?

with any luck -once we get you sorted out - you should be able to make town on a single tank of fuel!
