I have a clanking noise coming from the front of my 200 Tdi engine at idle. It sounds metallic.
The noise dissappears above 1500 rpm.
I have pulled all the belts off so I Know its not the air-con clutch bearing, idler pully bearing, viscous clutch or water pump.
Any ideas what it could be?? It now seems like it must be internal.

Hmmm , this may not make sense. But how does the timing of the noise sound in relation to RPM ? Is it rapid ? Or slower ?

Check the crankshaft pulley and damper for damage and check if the securing bolt is tight.

The noise does get faster as revs increase, and it might not be dissappearing at higher rpm's as I first thought just less audible because of diesel noise.
The noise also now runs on for a split second after the engine has been turned off.
I have checks the crank pulley and it didn't seem to be loose.

PS The engine is ohv with pushrods but manually adjusted tappets.

The reason I ask about the timing of the noise is that it could be either valve train related or crank related. THey spin at different speeds. I would get the pan off of it and take a look in there. You dont wanna pitch some parts out the side of the block and make more work for yourself.

Its not unknown for pulleys to fracture on 200 tdis. The sooner you get this fixed the cheaper it will be.
When it goes its tow truck and a giant sucking sound from your wallet as you replace all kinds of expensive bits damaged when the pulleys let go

Thanks everyone.
Found the problem, no crankshaft bolt. Must have been forgotten to be put in or it fell out, so the workshop that replaced my timing belt will hopefully be picking up the tab.
Look like new crank, timing gear and harmonic balance at a minimum.
