The other day I was forced to drive my 96 disco about 1.75 miles without the serpentine belt attached (it came off in the parking lot) I didn't really want to do this to it but if I left it where it broke off I wouldn't have had wheels or a car battery in the morning! I talked to a technician at the local dealership and he said that it should be fine I just had to watch my temperature. Well things went fine (no power steering so that was exciting)and my temperature gauge never truly got over the 3/4 mark. The people following me did notice my engine smoking a bit from the back but I assumed that was from coolant boil over or something. I know my water pump may be fried and I guess I was wondering how I would check that without damaging the engine any more than I might have. Just curious.
Thanks
Justin

Don't do that again. Rig a belt from the crank to the waterpump with cable ties in a pinch.
Waterpump fault diagnosis. Leaks from seap hole (do discos even have one?) play in the bearing (grab the end and shake) noise (listen with stetascope)

Water pump should not be a victim in this event. Does it 'wobble' when grabbed, does it leak out the seal 'hole', which is the precursor to the bearing failing, if no- then don't worry if engine stays at correct temp... Cheers

I appreciate the help guys, and I don't think that the water pump bit it on this one. I just have a drive ahead of me (Colorado to Montana) and I would hate to get stranded in the middle of wyoming during a blizzard because of a water pump!! Thanks for the help.
