I own a 1995 Discovery and I have the Rovertym suspension(front radius arms, rear bottom links, quiet cones, shock mounts, 2" springs and rs9000 shocks) sitting in my garage. I want to install it, but I am afraid that i'll screw it up somehow. Is the installation easy? I read the 3" rovertym install thing in the tech section, but the instructions are really vague(for the inexperienced). I also called John at Rovertym and he said that I wouldn't have to drill any holes(everything bolts right in the place of the old one), but according to the Rovertym suspension install by Tom, he had to drill something for the cones. Why did he do that? If anybody installed the Rovertym suspension, please help me out here.

I didn't have to drill for the cones, but I did have to cut/drill the for the new bottom shock mounts. John has seen my write-up, ask him about the cutting/drilling I did...maybe it was unecessary? It is also possible that he changed the mounts since I bought mine. He didn't mention anything to me about doing anything wrong...

If you want to talk about the install, email me off list & I'll give you my phone #.

As far as it being easy, that is all relative. If you have done a lot of this type of work before and have the right tools, yes it is easy. If you have not, then it will not be.

Tom

David,
Everything you have there is a bolt in...with the 2" lift and the RS 9234 rear shock, you just bolt in the top shock mount. Tom's 3" lift has also a lower rear shock mount that requires drilling 1 additional hole, you do not use that lower mount.

I just did the 2" springs and the rear links (waiting for the radius arms). I have never worked on my Rover before and with my brother-in-laws help we had no probs what so ever. The rear links were cake - took all of 30 minutes. The springs were relatively easy too if you have done any mechanical work. It is all pretty straight forward just pull one side at a time so you have a reference and its pretty much a part for part kind of thing.

Do I have to use a spring compressor or can I just un-do everything(sway bars, shocks, links, arms) to put in the new springs? Also do I have to really torque all the bolts?

David
You don't need a spring compressor.

The rear springs are easy, just disconnect the sway bars, disconnect the shock and lower the axle till the spring falls out.

On the front springs, disconnect the sway bar, remove the shock and place a bottle jack between the top of the axel and the frame and use this to push the axel down to release the spring. When doing this, MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR EYE ON YOUR BRAKE LINES, you don't want to pull them out !!! If you need more down travel, remove the front bolt on the radius arm at the axel and this will give you more down travel.

Get the compressor. I just did a 2" lift on my '96 this weekend. I tried to go without spring compressor, but ended up needing one. Right rear spring came out OK without compressor, but the rest were a real bitch. I DEFINITELY needed the compressor to get the new springs in. The compressor cost all of NOTHING to rent. At Checkers Auto Parts, I "paid" $57 for the compressor rental, but I'll get $57 back when I return it today. I'm not talking about buying a new tool and then returning it after I use it - this is their standard rental policy on a frequently-used piece of equipment. The only problem with the compressor is the fact that it is bulky and requires a lot of finessing to work the new spring in and then remove the compressor. As usual, a hammer and a lot of foul language helps...

shave off the cup, drill a hole, put the bolts through the holes, tighten.
