I have a clunking coming from under the footwell area when turning hard, when braking and over bumps in the road, similar to "ButchS" posting on Nov21, however all my radius arm and panhaard rod bolts are nice and tight.

In addition, it sometimes feels as though the truck is wondering while driving down a straight road and I need to compesate to continue straight, but not always. I just had the alignment checked and it was apparently fine.

I was instructed to see if there is a problem with the steering swivel and the wheel does rock when hands are positioned at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, but not really when at 3 & 9. So would this indicate that I have a problem withe the swivel? If so, is this a major job and can the truck be driven safely until I get around to doing it?

I have replaced the bearings in the opposite wheel recently so am feeling a little more confident in attacking this myself if not too difficult.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jon

Don't think it's the swivel doing that....you may need the preload adjusting anyway and that is mot too difficult...I would check the wheel bearing which probably only needs repacking with grease and torqueing correctly per the manual. Even though your radius arm bolts are tight howeverdoes not mean the bushes are still good...they can clonk loudly even when only slightly worn....I would replace them on the side of the clonk...again an easy DIY with a blow torch to burn them out and a vice and acouple of sockets to press the new ones in. I had the same problem on mine about 10K back.

I took the truck out for a buzz about and then tried the radius arms again to see if there was any movement. Although the nuts are all as tight as I can get them I did notice, for the first time, that one of the front arms will twist when a lot of pressure is applied to it, so it seems that the bushings are the source of the problem.

Now to find a 24mm spanner/wrench in the US without having to order one special.

Oh, to be home where metric isn't entirely a foreign language and spare parts are plentifull.

So, to pick anyones brains again.

Poly or rubber?

Rubber gives a softer ride. Poly gives a firmer ride and transmits more vibrations to the vehicle.

Jon,
I think we talked the other night at the SOLAROS meeting. Give me a call I have a press and all the tools to do the job.

Wow...Scott's your guy...has all the tools...I would go with rubber...better ride and less road noise/vibration. Poly tends to exaggerrate road imperfections.
