I am down to the RE 10,000lbs or the Platinum 9,000lbs...
which one should i go for, my bumper is custom made and can accomodate either...
thank you in advance...

I think you have to look at usage versus weight of the winch. Either winch will be powerful enough to pull you out of sticky situations. It's the weight of the winch you want to consider. Considering that the LR are slow as it is.

Hi big difference is that the RE series have worm gears while the platinum have planetary gears. The advantage of worm gears is that the gear itself becomes the brake. Typically worm gears are tougher, so if you are planning on lots and lots of winching, more than just once on every outing, the RE may be the best choice. We've had a platimum since they came out a couple of years ago and have not had any problems.

Nadim, go with the RE, if your bumper will accept either and you don't mind the extra weight. Besides being a worm drive, the RE has oil bathed gears rather than the greased planetary gearing of the platinum. This makes it far easier to service and less likely that you have to dismantle the entire winch to remove contaminants--dust and water. I assume the RE 10000 has a 3/8 cable compared to the 5/16 for the platinum? If this is not the case, go with the RE 12000 as it is the same size and only weighs a couple lbs more. Having just installed the RE 12000, I cannot speak about longevity but I can say it is a strong winch and does not strain with a weighted Disco.
The biggest downfall of the RE is its weight and size. I actually appreciate the fact that it is slower than a planetary.
If you have time, check out my RE install in the tech section

Nadim,
Go with the RE. Remember to change the oil in it regularly. If you do this it should last a very long time. Someone was complaining about the Platinium saying that the wire could get caught along side the drum, but I forget who.

to add to the fire...
i have also gotten a decent offer for a M8274-50???...now what?
the RE is way too heavy, and i think does not necessitate all this power on a disco, i can double rig whenever i want...but it is true that the worm gears are better, i can lubricate it easier, it is more of a workhorse...but it weighs a shitload more!...and that is not good!
regardless of price:
Platinum 9000
Warn M8274-50
Warn HS9500
i have to let go of the REs since they are way too heavy and cumbersome!
thanks again in advance

8274
All the way. Planetaries are crap. But the 8274 weighs almost as much as an RE.

Well, if you don't want the weight, you can't have the work-horses. In that case, I'd go with that Warn HS9500. When you double up the line, at least it will still pull fairly quickly (not that I like winch racing).
But I really want you to get that 8274 as I'm looking for a used one and want to see what it looks like on the Disco .

Will do and good luck!
PS. That RE would have been also good for that under-vehicle mount we're thinking about. That's because it's sealed better than the planetaries like somebody mentioned already. But I guess the low-profile HS will work too.

yeah....i think i'm gonna go for a front mounted one, the lighter the better...and when the going gets tough, double line the hell out of it!
therefore the HS seems to be the one of choice...low profile, and easier to maintain tham the platinum and i types...
