Guys & Gals,

Just thought I'd give you a heads up re a problem and solution I had with my 99 Disco 2. I have a V8 Auto and do a fair bit of off-roading. I had a progressively increasing noise, similar to the worn tappet noise you get in V8s of some vintage recently, audible particularly when accelerating away from lights or up hills. It also had a slightly metalic click to it.

To compound the problem, there was also a bearing worn in one of the pulleys in the front of the engine.

Taking it to the dealer we found that much to my relief, the noise wasn't an engine bearing or the tappets, but a loosening of the connection in the exhaust where the headers are joined to the exhaust pipe just below the manifold. On acceleration, the exhaust pressure forced the gap to open slightly causing the "tappet" type noise. It also manifested itself by a black smudge on the metal around the join, (which in my case was coated brown from the mud and dust), and easily visible. The loose/worn bearing in the pulley was the tensioner (not the one recently subject to the recall).

Just something to listen and watch out for.

Milt

Many existing recalls on the idler/tension pulleys, ABS relay, ACE lines, etc. The exhaust downpipe joint problem one is very common in all discos and I actually broke out all 3 studs on the left juncture a couple of weeks ago on Kane Creek. For the constant info flow on all these "concerns", you should hit disco2owners.

You, too, Milt... Glad to see you're still around!
