Checking under the Disco yesterday, I noticed some leaking gear oil under the gearbox..not a lot but enough to feel when I touched it with my hand. Also a few drops on my garage floor. My Haynes Manual says leaks are common there from the seals. The transmission fluid was ok when I checked it.

Do I need to replace the gear box or can I get the seals replaced without having to spend a grand on a new one? Can I wait a while to fix it? Will this affect only the high/low gear/diff lock, or will it affect the entire automatic transmission? Any other suggestions?

By gearbox, do you mean Transmission or Transfer Case? In my case, the bottom gasket on my transfer case was leaking. I probably disturbed the seal when I hi-centered it or something while off-roading. The dealer replaced it with no problems under warranty.

LoL,
Mike

I believe its the transfer case. Its right in the middle under the seats and console. My Disco is a 95 and dont think a warranty applies.

Can I buy the seals without having to buy the entire case?

I am not an expert in Transfer Cases, but I will pass on what was told to me by a reputable mechanic. The transfer case on a Disco is an LT230. It is the same on used on 4x4 Ford pickup trucks and other vehicles. Supposedly, it is a very good product.

Look carefully at the leak. If it is the seal on the bottom of the T-Case then it can easily be repaired. If it is leaking around the seals then the T-Case has to be pulled and rebuilt. This is a major undertaking according to the mechanic.

LoL,
Mike
