I have a 97 Disco that has 2 rust spots and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows what is best for fixing this. They are on the rear wheel arch where the rear doors are, and is right in the rear corner of these (both sides), where the wheel arch then becomes vertical for the door frame. Both corners have a nice little nest of rust in them about .5 of an inch across and I want to stop it before it gets worse. my quandary is that I'm not sure if the body shell is aluminum or steel here and dont want to damage it more than the rust is doing with the wrong treatment. Any clues anyone?
Thanks.

I've got the same rust spots on my 97 Disco and I've seen it on three others when I was looking around for a "new" truck. I don't know the answer to your question but I'll make some enquiries of my local independent Land Rover specialist.

To be sure if this area is made of aluminum or steel, try with a magnet. You will see that only exterior panels are made of aluminum.

I've got the same on my '97 - has anyone tackled LRNA on this one?

I just got my 95 back from the dealer for repair on rust around the alpine windows. Covered under warranty, no questions asked. LRNA warranty covers body rust for 6 years from the "service date" of the vehicle.

Todd

ps. I made the cut-off date by a month and a half.

6 Years.....

Well I didn't know that. I'll get mine booked in straight away. I hope that's the same warranty in the UK.

Antony.

Take it to your dealer. My 97 rusted in the same place and was fixed under warranty. You may have to haggle -- interior rust warranty is 3 years and exterior is 6 years. Kind of subjective to wether or not that is interior or exterior. If one dealer says no, go to another.

By the way, if you are rusting anywhere, you are probably also rusting on other parts you don't know about (under the bonnet near the radiator, etc). If you get the full inspection by the body shop your dealer recommends, they will find more if it is there...it's in thier best intere$t to do so!!

Another route is call the dealer "anonymously" and ask what body shop they recommend and then go there for an inspection and discussion on the warranty before seeing the dealer. The more you know before getting the dealer involved, the better off you are.

By all means, pursue the warranty route first.

For rust treatment/preventative, I have started using a product called POR15. It is the absolute best stuff for rust that I have ever seen. They have a website (www.por15.com) and sell starter kits inexpensively. All of their claims are incredible, but true. Trust me, you will LOVE this stuff. Don't forget to check out the clear version!

Thanks,
Mike

P.S. - I don't work or own stock in the company, I just love their products.

THanks Mike...I tested it, its steel and I ordered the por15 after a good reading of their web site. Seems like good stuff. As long as it can prevent a hole appearing, then I'll be happy.

Hey guys, I'm the proud new owner of a '97 Disco with 30k on the odometer and have the same problem. I haven't talked to the dealer yet (Richmond, VA) but have every reason to believe they'll take care of it under warranty. Has anyone had this repaired, what is the cause, and can it be prevented from reoccuring? Thanx!
David

David,

I had this taken care of on my Disco. The cause is Aluminum + Steel = Corrosion. Common on many land rovers. What the body shop does is sandblast and pry apart the metal. They then seal it with plastic or rubbers sleeves and some "goop" so the metal doesn't touch anymore, so no more rust.

There are other common areas for rust, so be sure to ask for a full rust inspection. As mentioned, areas around the Alpine windows rust, as well as some areas up front around the radiator...didn't actually see that one, was just told it was fixed. Another good idea is to pull up the carpet in the rear and look in the corners...mine was rusting there, also fixed under warranty.

The one thing you have to worry about is that the warranty covers 'interior' rust for 3 years and exterior for 6 years....it is somewhat subjective to wether or not the inside of the door jambs is exterior or interior. Don't mention it, hopefully they won't either.

Tom
