When changing tranny fluid, where do you put the new oil? Does it go into the dipstick shaft? And how many quarts would I need to put in? I've gone thru the list and it's never been discussed.

Yes, fill it through the dipstick shaft. Regardless of how much ATF the tranny will hold
you will not be able to drain it all since the torque converter will still be holding quite a bit.

ATF is cheap compared to a tranny so do a few drains and fills if you can. Driving for a while between changes.

You can only drain a small part of the dirty fluid that is in there. It is almost a waste of time.

Take it to a shop and have it flushed by machine.

Does anyone have any recommended shops? Ammco? Price for a tranny flush? TIA!

I just called the local aamco here and they told me they didn't want to do it! Since they are supposedly tranny specialists and they don't want to do it, is this really a simple job to do? should I take it to the dealer?

Most lube shops will do it. Goodyear (Gemini) in Indiana does a flush and fluid change for about $90.00. Had fluid changed (only fluid, no filter) at a Cottman Transmission (natioanl chain) for $29.95

I took mine to Lee Myles for a tranny service and they won't touch it when they saw the amt of work involved. Had to end up at the dealer. Same with AAmco. It's about 3 hrs labor they are claiming. So the cost is going to be close to the dealership's.

That is if you change the filter for which you have to drop the tranny x member, drain and refill is easy.

So for a disco with 78K mi., with the last tranny oil change done at 60K mi., is an oil change good enough?

Yes.

Technically you are only supposed to change the fluild and filter every 30k so you would be doing extra.

Per the dealer the filter change at 30K is really compulsory. Then after that the filter dont have to be replace for the life of the vehicle. I dont get the logic. This is just a reap-off. Im not even sure if they really replace the filter. I have a 97 with 34,000 and I just drain and refill the fluid at 28,000 miles without bringing to the dealer. The Transmission oil is as clean as new and did not find any metal residue that sticks in the drain plug.

Andy,

That would depend if the filter was changed at 60k. LR has changed their recommendation on trans filter changes. I don't think they change it after the 30k change, unless you specify that it's done!

I would do a trans filter every 30k and ATF every 3rd (motor) oil change, or 10k miles.
