I'm ordering an ARB bar to fit on my 97 Disco. I'd like to fit a warn 8274-50. Any suggestions? Is anyone currently running this setup? I like the 8274 because of the gearing. I'm planning to run amsteel or similar recovery rope and the 8274 is supposed to not heat the drum up like the planetary winches. According to my D90 buddies the amsteel does not take heat to well. I had been considering a superwinch Husky 8 but have found a good deal on the Warn. Any advice/comments is appreciated.

thanks, Ross

Its a nice Jeep winch but tends to complain a bit on hard pulls with a heavy truck. Then again , so do most of the planetaries I have sen..

I think the 8274 is a great winch and not just for Jeeps. However, it all depends how much you load your Disco. We had this discussion before and if you do expedition-style wheeling with a 7000 lb truck, then you'd be better served with at least a 10000 lb winch. The 8274 is great if you winch a lot where you tend to drive while winching. Otherwise, under load, it really is no faster than any other winch (this is actually true of all high speed winches). However, with the 8274, you can laways double up the line and still have decent length cable as it has a big spool.

I also reported a bit on my experience with the Amsteel blue and heat damage. It's a lot tougher than you think but the danger of burning the rope is real. I'd stick with a worm or spur gear drive winches if you either use them very heavily or if you are worried about the possible damage. Again, search below for more info.

Hi Ross, I started a similar post earlier and here is what I have discovered so far.
The 8274 will fit on my ARB ( non airbag ) with some spacer blocks to move it back, I was a bit put off by the cost though. An M12000 will fit on the ARB bar and costs about the same as the 8274. I also looked at the Superwinch X9, it will fit and has lots of pulling power for a small winch and it is very inexpensive. I spoke with 4 Wheeling America and they use the Master Pull line and have had no problems with it so far on either the X9 or the S9000 they use.
I am also still exploring how difficult it would be to make a tray to support a Husky 10 ( my preference ).
I can update you more as I progress with my research.

The main advantage of an 8274 is that you can beat the crap out of it and it will still function properly. While it pulls slowly under heavy load, because of its design it can run closer to its limits longer. It is the same winch used one Camel trophy discos and even 110 which were very heavily laden. While I feel 8000 planitary on a disco is a bit light the 8274 is certainly powerfull enough, and if it is not then you can always double the line with a pully block as it has 150ft of cable. If you can make it fit on a disco it is a great winch.

PS I am picking up an M8000 (what an 8274 was called before 1974) this weekend and I have a bellview what it was called when it first came out in the late 1950s. Also a husky 8 and a warn xd9000i

Ron,

Are you selling those winches? If so how much for the Husky 8?

No, not selling, they are for my personal use. If you want a warn I know a guy superwinch I don't know anyone who sells them inexpensively, maybe try summit racing? i dunno.

Ron

PS I have a koenig and a capstan as well.
