It is advised to put a plug at the bottom of the timing cover and also in the bellhousing during wading.
My questions are:
Where and what is a timer cover. What part of the bellhousing need to be plugged?
Where do you buy the plug?

If you have the facility in the bellhousing use it during wading. At some point when they started selling Discos in the States they deleted the facility because they felt that US customers could not handle the task. Some people will fill the drain slot with soilicone and then drill and tap a drain for a plug. Note that this is only for manual tranny cars to protect the clutch.

The timing cover is available for Diesel models and shoud also be used when wading

This wading stuff is awfull confusing. So I have a NA 96 with auto tranny. Do I need to worry about wading plugs? (not that I go wading in anything deep enough to worry, just curious).

I'm not going to say it's ok to do,
but I've been in water where the bow wave is level with the hood, no problems.
Proper technique is the key.
Ease into it and then apply steady throttle until you are out.
Sometimes i still can't believe the pictures that I have going through that river.
Rovers are amazing.
