Well a few weeks ago I noticed that the insides of my front tires (13,000 miles) were beginning to wear and I took my Disco into the Dealer for a check of alignment. It was out of alignment. He aligned it and rotated the tires front to back. Well it drives OK but I now have a persistent whine from the rear tires.

The dealer went on to say that the Goodyear Wranglers were not good tires and wore out fast. He suggested I might consider switching to Michelin - which he could get me into for a TAD under a grand for all 4 tires.

So naturally I passed out from hearing this!!!!

So - question - is there a decent tire for these beasts for under $100 per tire. What do others recommend and suggest - oh yes - I do mainly highway driving and occasional off roading.

Look at the Cooper and Pep Boy (same tire) A/T radials. Should fit your need.

255/65HR16, right? Dunlop Grandtrek TG35 - $83 each. Also, General Grabber ST - $56 each. Dunlop's pretty good. General is cheap, but they use them a lot in England as aftermarket refittments, so they can't be but so bad. And, of course both are H-rated for all that 130 mph driving you'll be doing in your hot-rod Disco (just joking :-) If you opted for the 255/55HR18, everything is close to $200 per tire. ...but I forgot to add, of course your dealer would prefer you to use Michelins on your truck. They are, of course, OEM. And naturally, you only want OEM parts on your truck to ensure its optimal operation. Then you realize, there are other brands of parts to use on your truck, that surprisingly don't cost as much and seem to work just as well, if not better, than the OEM stuff. So the Dunlops are probably a good choice for most of your driving. If you're willing to spend a little more than $100 per tire (but less than the XPCs) Pirelli makes a great highway tire called the Scorpion S/T. Good luck!

Be careful of Pirelli Scorpions; if you do any sidewall scuffing they don't take that lightly. I recently replaced a set with less that 45K that had multiple sidewall holes.. MTCW
