When I bought my disco, my sales guide told me not to fill up with Shell. Has anyone had any problems when using Shell 'brand' gas?

Just used Shell on a 2K road trip in my 94 Disco, 219K on it; no problems. Shell is a premium brand; I can't imagine any reason not to use it.

Humm,
never had problems with Shell. Filled up a lot with it. Always told that BP (ironically) was bad due to some of the additives. I guess they could be the same as Shell, BP and Amaco are all part of the same company I think.

No, actually based on the way things have worked out the oil you get from one company could be very different from another. Not only do they use different additives but, depending on where the oil was drilled it could have varing qualities. I avoid BP based on superstition, but otherwise don't really care.

Filled up with BP once...50 miles down the road the amber check engine light came on. The Rover Tech said the gas was bad, so no more BP for me. Shell seems to work fine, though.

I think almost all gas station, no matter what the brands are, share/trade gas among each other? That is, the gas is the same no matter which brand you use. The only different is the additive. I have seen some cross selling agreements between gas companies, which state that, depending on the supply and demand, the gas companies are contracted to sell gas among each others.

That's why I don't know why people can compare the gas among different brands.

As far as BP, I was told it was some additive they put in it, hokey yes but I have heard too much to be chance.
