After recently purchasing a 1997 Disco SD, I have been considering installing aftermarket sunroofs.
My sagging headliner is pushing me to make a decision.
I have been somewhat sceptical about them, but my LR dealer does it all the time to their new cars, and the install looks quite good. They claim the SR brand is authorized by LR. The sliders include shades and the glass closes automatically when the doors are locked. The only thing I recently heard from a friend who recently got her Honda appraised for trade is that her aftermarket roof was a deficit when she went to trade it. In other words, the dealer was giving her less for her car WITH the roof than if it did not have the roof at all.

I would hate to devalue the car after dropping 1500 bucks on the sliders in the first place. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Your friend with the Honda got the shaft from the dealer who took the trade in. They screwed her. Take a look at kbb.com and add a sunroof to any vehicle and its value goes up. I would advise your friend to always take someone with her when she goes to make car deals in the future so she avoids getting screwed again.

Since most Discos have sunroofs the fact that you don't would probably greatly inhibit its resale appeal. Is that to say that adding it will add $1500 to the resale value? No, but it will definitly be worth more with it.

Maybe you wanna take a look at eBay auction. I have seen a genuine LR sunroof went for as low as $75.00 (well, you will have to spend more money on labor) Good Luck!

Both of the electric sunroofs are leaking on my 1997 truck. I wish I could take them out and replace them with metal!

Does anyone know if it is much of a job to strip them down in order to apply bucket loads of sealant?

I own a 1996 Discovery with dual sunroofs. Have had both sunroofs replaced TWICE under warranty. Now I am out of warranty and beginning to fear another need to replace them. Furthermore, any time you cut a hole in the roof, you weaken the structure of the vehicle. Think about that next time you go rock-crawling. Lots of flex there. If I had it to do over again, I would go with the SD model so I could avoid the sunroofs. We have to have doors and windows for ingress/egress and for proper all-around vision, but sunroofs are just an option.

I have an aftermarket roof in my 97 SD. It was put in by Classic Soft Trim in Hartford, CT. It is BETTER than the factory roofs. The Rover roofs leak, squeak, break, and all are not relaible as evidenced from these posts. This roof, made by Hollandia, (I beleive) is AWESOME! No leaks, no noise, it closes automatically when you turn off the truck, it has actually has a solid sunshade, and it is a bit bigger than the factory roof. Just get one to start, you dont need dual roofs, how often are you in the back of the truck anyway. Plus youll save $750 bucks. I say go for it, I would defintely do it again.

I would be willing to talk trade to someone with a non-sunroof roof panel to exchange for my dual factory sunroof roof panel. That is assuming that they are easily replaceable as on Range Rovers.

All of the Disco's I've had were sunroof models(94,96,97X2,98). At one time or other all of the sunroof's developed leaks. At first I went to the dealer and they replaced everything imaginable to no avail. After a friend mentioned the drain hoses I was set. In every case it has been that the drain hoses were clogged up. A quick shot of air to the drain hoses to unplug them cured the problem each time. However on the front sunroof you have to spend some time getting to the front hoses. Good luck with aftermarket roofs. Don't choose by price alone.

I have a 95 Disco without any sunroofs. I guess I bought the stripped version. Honestly however I am very glad I did. No leaks!!!!

How common are these 95s without sunroofs? I havn't seen another one here in florida.

I have a 94 Disco with dual genuine sunroofs (it came that way), the 7 seat all leather, and dual AC.. I am the only 94 I have ever seen with all these options from the factory.. It was to my knowledge and my Dealer at Land Rover Hinsdale that I had one of the few 94 Disco's to have all the options from the factory.. He mentioned that it may have been one of the first few available in the states?! Anyway you can tell?

I don't have any wierd sunroof leaks either..

Thanks, Ben

I checked with Classic Soft Trim, here in the northern Virginia/DC area. They wanted $1600 for both roofs, but said they could do it for their corp-to-dealer price of $1250 for both roofs (spoke to "Terry"). They said they do all the dealer installs for Land Rover in the DC area.

The one thing I was concerned about, they said they put the rear sunroof controls into the headliner. Hmmm, I thought the controls were supposed to go on the panel on the roof hump.

Anyone had their roofs installed by CST in the DC area? Where did they put the controls?

Maybe if I could get the LR part #'s for the sunroof control panels (both forward and aft), I could just take the controls to CST and tell them to use the LR controls instead.

Scott

FYI, CST's website:
http://www.classicsofttrim.com/Sunroofs.asp
They use the "Top-Slider" models for the Disco's.

Ben,

I also have a 'fully loaded' '94...

Dual sunroofs, rear AC, jump seats, leather, etc.

I think you are right about them being rare. I have not seen another that had all of the options either.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By ken on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 10:06 am: Edit

Wisker, Your Disco with the seats but no step means that it was originally a 5 seater, and the jump seats were added afterward. All 7 seat Discos from the factory had the step.

Or someone took off the step, or a rock did it for them.

Either way I'm happy not having the sunroofs after reading all of the posts and also I wouldn't trust them if I really torqued the body while wheeling. I'll probably ditch the jumpseats in favor of cargo space soon. They're pretty useless to me. no if it wasn't for that damn rotoflex . . .

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By ken on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 - 11:20 am: Edit

Wisker, its very simple to swap the rotoflex for a u-joint. Atlantic British sells a kit. That thing has to go, Im surprised yours has lasted this long.

I've looked for the drain holes but can't find them for love nor money. Could anyone who knows where these are and how to get to them let me know please?

Also, are there many trucks out there with:-

Front and rear aircon
Roof bars
Side steps
Rear step
Electric front seats
Cruise control
7 grey leather seats
6 CD player.
Twin leaking electric sunroofs
Factory walnut trim.
Front A bar with twin spots

It's a Brisish 1997 V8i ES. Do Discoverys with aircon normally have both front and rear aircon or was this an extra option? I bought the truck 2nd hand a few months ago and am still getting to know of all it's faults/factory features......

It certainly knows how to keep the owner busy and broke. Bloody good fun though.

Antony.
